SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In a doubleheader at San Diego, the Harvard Crimson started game one with a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 6-5 to the San Diego Toreros. In game two, the Crimson and Toreros both scored twice in the fourth inning and ended the game in a 2-2 tie after eight innings.
How it Happened
In the first game, the Crimson got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Harvard put together a three-run frame, culminating in a run-scoring single from Brianna Jewett.
The Toreros then tied the ballgame at three before the Crimson came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Harvard pushed across a run on Madi Mays' one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Crimson.
Harvard held San Diego without a run before building their lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning. The Crimson scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Lauren Bobowski. The Crimson were unable to hold the lead, as San Diego scored three times in the bottom half of the seventh to grab the 6-5 win.
Both teams remained scoreless for the first three innings of the second game, then both added two runs in the fourth. They closed out seven innings with no additional runs and both were unable to add a run to win the game in the eighth, bringing the final score to a 2-2 tie.
Harvard Highlights
• In game one, Harvard's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed three runs across.
• In game one, offensively, the Crimson were paced by Bobowski, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and an RBI. Mays put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Jewett also helped out for Harvard, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
• Both Bobowski and senior Trina Hoang stole two bases in the first game, while the Crimson stole five bases as a team.
• In game two, Harvard was led offensively by first-year Finley Payne, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Mays went 3-for-4 with a run. Allison O'Heaney scored the other RBI for the Crimson while Kendall Jean made it home for the other run.
• Three Crimson pitchers struck out four Toreros batters in game two.
