Baseball Drops Narrow 5-4 Decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Game Two

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Junior Ben Rounds tallied three RBIs and a home run, and junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver allowed just one run over 6.0 innings in the start, but Harvard University baseball dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night at Chapman Field.
 
In game two of the four-game series, the Crimson (1-13) gained leads of 2-0 and 3-1 and later tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the ninth before the host Islanders (10-9) walked off with the win on a run in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Rounds hit his third home run of the season while Driver registered six or more strikeouts for the third time in his last three starts. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver tossed 6.0 innings in the start, permitting just one earned run on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts. He has registered six or more strikeouts in each of his last three starts.
  • Junior Ben Rounds tallied two hits, three RBIs, a home run, and a run scored. He posted his third homer of the season.
  • Senior Logan Bravo registered two hits, including a double.
  • Junior Peter Messervy notched a hit with a double, two runs scored, and a walk. He logged his team-high eighth double of the season.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Harrison Stovern threw 2.1 innings pitched in relief, giving up one unearned run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. 

How It Happened

  • After Messervy worked a lead-off walk in the top of the first, Rounds launched a two-run home run to left center field to give the Crimson an early 2-0 lead.
  • Texas A&M-CC cut the margin to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
  • In the top of the fifth, Messervy drove a double to left center with one out to put himself in scoring position. He later scored from second on an error.
  • The Islanders took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs to move ahead, 4-3.
  • The Crimson knotted the score at 4-4 in the top of the ninth as first-year Gio Colasante came home on an RBI single to left field from Rounds.
  • The hosts scored the game-winning run on a ground ball in the bottom of the ninth.
