Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Laferriere's Dramatic OT Game-Winner Sends No. 6/6 Men's Ice Hockey Past No. 10/11 Cornell, 1-0, in ECACH Semifinal

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Junior forward Alex Laferriere scored the game-winning goal at 4:28 of overtime to lift No. 6/6 Harvard men's ice hockey (24-6-2) to a 1-0 win over Cornell (20-10-2) on Friday night (March 17) at Herb Brooks Arena.

Harvard advances to the ECAC Hockey Championship game for the second year in a row, where it will face Colgate for a chance to win its second straight Whitelaw Cup.

On the game-winning goal, first-year forward Joe Miller took a pass from Laferriere, skated down the left wing and fired a pass to an open Baker Shore in the slot. Shore fed cross-ice to Laferriere, who found the open net to send the Harvard bench spilling onto the ice.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a scoreless first period, Harvard had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Just over three minutes into the opening frame, sophomore defenseman Ian Moore fired a long shot that classmate Zakary Karpa redirected on net.

Shane made the initial stop, and Karpa just missed the puck on his diving swipe for the rebound – Harvard's best chance of the frame.

Early in the second period, at 1:24, senior goaltender Mitchell Gibson (15 saves) came up with a great glove stop on a net drive by Jack O'Leary to keep the game scoreless.

Harvard had the game's first power play at 4:50 of the second on an after-the-whistle charging call on the Big Red but failed to capitalize.

Later on in the period, Gibson came up with another big stop, kicking out his left pad on a Travis Mitchell shot from the left wing at 12:50.

Laferriere intercepted a pass at center ice midway through the third period and cut in on a 2-on-2 rush, getting a shot off through a Cornell defenseman that Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (24 saves) kicked away.

Harvard forced a turnover in the Cornell zone with under 10 minutes to play in the third period, with Farrell finding Karpa for a quick wrist shot from the left circle that Shane shouldered away with 8:20 to go.

The Crimson killed off a late third period penalty to Baker Shore assessed for high sticking at 14:18 of the third period, sending the game to OT.
