Women's Lacrosse Earns 20-2 Win at Merrimack Behind Several Standout Performances

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior midfielder Callie Hem scored five goals to lead five players who had double-digit goal efforts in an 20-2 win for Harvard Women's Lacrosse on Wednesday night (March 22) at Merrimack. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard and Merrimack met for the first time in the history of both programs - Merrimack elevated its program to Division I in 2020.
  • Hem scored on Harvard's first possession to get things going for the Crimson, making it 1-0 at 14:26.
  • After Merrimack evened the score, Harvard went on a six-goal run to take control of the game in the first quarter. Ilana Kofman scored from in close, and Hem followed with a free position goal at 11:49 to make it 3-1.
  • Another free position goal from first-year Kate Gilliam at 11:20 was followed by two more goals from Charlotte Hodgson (10:22 and 7:03 – free position shot) sandwiched around another goal by Hem at 8:14, who made a great catch, followed by a quick move and a low shot on her goal.
  • Harvard scored four straight goals to close out the first quarter, as Hem notched her fourth goal of the frame at 5:56.
  • That was followed by three goals in a span of less than a minute, as Riley Campbell scored her first goal of the day with 1:53 to go in the frame, which was followed by goals from Gilliam (1:25) off a great pass by Campbell.
  • Campbell closed out the frame with a goal of her own at 1:01 to make it 11-2.
  • Harvard scored all five goals in the second quarter to put the game out of reach by halftime. Hodgson completed her hat trick with a woman-down goal at 13:56, cutting to the left and firing to the opposite side to make it 12-2.
  • Stephanie Hong scored her first goal of the year on a free position shot at 9:47. Then Abbie Izzo notched her first collegiate goal at 7:38 off a great pass from Caroline Mullahy (four assists).
  • Charley Meier scored her first goal of the day on a great cut to the front and pass from Maddie Barkate at 5:49. Hem notched her fifth of the day at 4:06 to round out the first half scoring and give Harvard a 16-2 lead at the halftime break.
  • The career firsts continued int eh second half as Kelsey Kenney scored her first collegiate goal, flipping in a shot off a loose ball scrim in front of the crease at 12:30.
  • Senior captain Meredith Langmuir fired a shot from distance into the net at 9:15 of the third quarter to make it 18-2.
  • Kate Izzo scored at 9:30 of the fourth quarter, her first collegiate goal, cutting in front of the crease and picking a corner to make it 19-2.
  • Abbie Izzo rounded out the scoring with just over a minute to play, cutting into the eight-meter and firing a low shot into the net.
  • Chloe Provenzano made five second half saves to keep Merrimack off the board in the final 30 minutes.
