Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Cornell, 11-6, 3-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Will Jacobsen went 4-for-7 with two doubles and three runs scored on the day, but Harvard University baseball dropped an Ivy League doubleheader to Cornell University, 11-6 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
The Crimson (12-19, 8-4 Ivy) held early leads in both contests before the visiting Big Red (6-20, 5-7 Ivy) came back to win both games and take the series, 2-1, after Harvard won the series opener on Friday. Harvard has still won three of its first four Ivy League series on the year.
 
Jacobsen led the Crimson with his .571 average over the two games while first-year Gio Colasante finished 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs over the two contests. In game two, sophomore right-hander Sean Matson and first-year right-hander Callan Fang combined to toss 9.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
 
Harvard Athletics' Bark at the Park event took place alongside the doubleheader.


   

GAME 1: Cornell 11, Harvard 6

Senior Hunter Baldwin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as four Crimson recorded at least two hits, but Harvard University baseball fell to Cornell in the day's first game, 11-6.
 
The Crimson held a 2-0 lead through three innings before the Big Red scored the game's next nine runs on its way to evening up the series at one game apiece.
 
Senior Hunter Baldwin led the Crimson at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. Junior Peter Messervy, senior Will Jacobsen, and first-year Gio Colasante each contributed two hits.

  • The Big Red then rallied to score nine runs and take a 9-2 lead, scoring seven runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth.
  • The Crimson got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Harvard picked up two runs in the frame behind an RBI single from Brown and an RBI double from Messervy, which tightened the Big Red lead to 9-4.
  • Cornell expanded its lead to 10-4 in the seventh.
  • The Harvard offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 10-5 in the seventh. The Crimson notched a run on Baldwin's two-out RBI double.
  • The Big Red pushed its margin to 11-5 in the ninth.
  • Harvard scored once in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single up the middle from Baldwin. 

GAME 2: Cornell 3, Harvard 2 

Sophomore right-hander Sean Matson and first-year right-hander Callan Fang combined to not allow an earned run in the game, but Harvard dropped a 3-2 decision to Cornell in the season finale.
 
The Crimson took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and pulled within 3-2 in the sixth before the Big Red held on for the win.
 
Matson went five innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out five. Fang came out of the bullpen and threw four shutout innings, allowing two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. At the plate, first-year Gio Colasante tallied a hit, a walk, and two RBIs, and senior Will Jacobsen went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
