CAMBRIDGE, Mass – The Harvard men's lacrosse team (5-5, 2-2 Ivy) dropped a hard-fought Ivy League contest to No. 18 Penn this afternoon. The Crimson got three goals from its captain,
Nick Loring, but it was not enough to overcome the No. 18 Quakers, who escaped Cambridge with a 15-9 win.
Logan Ip registered two goals and
Collin Bergstrom led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers. Harvard's record in the Ivy League slid to 2-2 but the team remains in the running for an Ivy League playoff spot as it now sits in fourth place in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crimson and Penn met at Jordan Field for the first time since 2019 on a beautiful 60 – degree day in Cambridge.
- The Quakers were able to rally to start the game, putting three goals on the board in the first ten minutes, building an early 3-0 lead. Christian Barnard continued his strong play and helped keep the Crimson in the running by making four saves in the first quarter.
- Harvard picked it up in the offensive end later in the frame, getting on the board with 5:39 to go in the first quarter courtesy of Teddy Malone. Chase Yager registered a goal in back-to-back games with a strike in the closing minutes to make the score 3-2, where it would remain at the end of the first frame.
- The Crimson brought the energy in the second quarter, sparked by the defense. Charlie Muller, Collin Bergstrom and Ray Dearth all caused turnovers in the first five minutes to hold off the Quaker attack. Nick Loring deposited the tying goal into the back of the net at 10:09 in the quarter to put the Crimson level.
- Owen Gaffney followed suit with a goal to give the Crimson its first lead of the day at 8:13 in the quarter. The Quakers answered with a quick two-goal run to retake the lead late in the second quarter. Loring did not let the lead last long, threading another shot past the Penn goalie at 3:09 in the quarter.
- Both teams had chances to take the lead, but the goalies combined to make five saves in the final three minutes to keep the score at 5-5 at the halftime break.
- Sam King started the scoring in the second half, netting a goal just over thirty seconds into the third quarter. Penn leveled the score quickly, with a strike less than a minute after to tie the score back up.
- The Quakers would go on a five-goal run, ended by a late goal from Loring. Penn used the run to take a 11-7 lead at the third quarter break.
- Two more goals from the Quakers kicked of the fourth quarter. Logan Ip ended that run with his first goal of the game at 8:32 in the quarter.
- Ip would go on to tally one more goal, but Penn would add another pair of goals in retaliation. The Quakers second half surge boosted them to the 15-9 victory.
