Chris Clark gave up just two runs in the start, and the Crimson's bullpen duo of senior
Harrison Stovern and
Callan Fang did not permit a run, allowing No. 2 seed Harvard University baseball to rally past No. 3 seed Princeton University, 3-2, in the opening game of the 2023 Ivy League Tournament on Friday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Competing in the first game of the inaugural four-team Ivy League Tournament, the Crimson (20-22) faced a 2-0 deficit entering the bottom of the seventh before scoring twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to come back and beat the Tigers (22-22).
The Crimson – which won six of its seven Ivy League series during the regular season – improved to 7-1 in its last eight games and to 3-1 against Princeton on the year after taking the regular season series from the Tigers, 2-1.
Harvard advanced to the winner's side of the bracket and will face either No. 1 seed Penn or No. 4 seed Columbia on Saturday, May 20 at 3:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

Harvard Highlights
- Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark threw 7.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs – both earned – on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
- Senior left-hander Harrison Stovern captured the win, tossing a scoreless eighth, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
- First-year right-hander Callan Fang – the Ivy League Rookie of the Year – earned the save, throwing a scoreless ninth inning, permitting one hit while striking out two.
- Junior Jake Berger went 3-for-3 with a double, a run, and a walk. He notched his third game with three or more hits this season.
- Sophomore George Cooper finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. He scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. He posted his fifth game this year with three or more hits.
- Senior Zach Brown tallied an RBI as his sacrifice fly in the last of the seventh tied the score at 2-2.
- Senior Will Jacobsen registered a walk and a run, scoring the game-tying run in the seventh.
- Juniors Ben Rounds and Peter Messervy each added a hit.
How It Happened
- Junior Chris Clark held Princeton scoreless through six innings, limiting the Tigers to one hit and one walk with five strikeouts over that timeframe.
- The Crimson threatened to break the tie in the bottom of the second as junior Jake Berger doubled and advanced to third. Harvard put itself in a similar position in the last of the sixth as sophomore George Cooper doubled and made it to third before the frame concluded.
- In the top of the seventh, Princeton's Scott Bandura sent a solo home run to right field to break the tie and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. A second run came home following a hit by pitch.
- The Crimson countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. After Harvard put runners on first and second with no outs, Berger came around to score following a sacrifice bunt from junior Peter Messervy. The Crimson then knotted the game on a sacrifice fly from senior Zach Brown that scored senior Will Jacobsen.
- Senior left-hander Harrison Stovern came on in the top of the eighth, retiring the side in a scoreless inning to keep the sore at 2-2.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Cooper led off the inning with a double before junior Ben Rounds sent a single to left field that allowed Cooper to come home as the go-ahead run.
- First-year right-hander Callan Fang shut the door in the top of the ninth, earning the save and sealing the victory for the Crimson.
