NESN to Air Harvard Athletics Title IX Documentary to Conclude Yearlong Celebration

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – During a yearlong period of reflection and looking ahead, Harvard Athletics celebrated this past year the 50th anniversary of Title IX, along with the achievements of its women student-athletes and teams. To conclude the celebration, Harvard Athletics is proud to announce "50 Years of Title IX at Harvard" will air on NESN in June.

The documentary will premiere on NESN on Thursday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET, the eve of the anniversary of the passage of Title IX, and features prominent female figures from the last 50 years of Harvard Athletics, including Erin McDermott, The John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey '92. The documentary, which will re-air on NESN and NESN+ throughout July, will also be shown via a Harvard Athletics YouTube Watch Party on June 25 at 8 p.m.

"We are at a really terrific time," McDermott said in the documentary. "And I am humbled everyday by the greatness around us with how excellent our women athletes are, how excellent our coaches are, and it is a reminder constantly that it is a hallmark of this place, that it is about excellence and we celebrate excellence and we will continue to do that."

The Crimson opened the 2022-23 academic year and marked the beginning of its celebration by unveiling a Harvard Title IX logo and flag, which was prominently displayed atop Harvard Stadium. Harvard also launched a microsite on GoCrimson.com where a wide array of Title IX-related content was posted throughout the year, including several on-camera interviews with student-athletes and coaches, and facts about its women's teams such as the 166 Ivy League titles and 38 team national championships they have won since the passing of Title IX. Just this season alone, Crimson women's teams won five Ivy titles and two national crowns.

Once competition began, Harvard Athletics played host to numerous postgame youth clinics with its women's teams and Title IX celebration games across the fall, winter and spring. In late September/early October, the Crimson held its Title IX Celebration Weekend, which was planned around women's rugby, women's volleyball, football and women's soccer home games. Then in the spring, the Harvard Varsity Club played host to its 50 Years of Title IX Celebration, featuring an alumnae panel discussion and gala dinner, with fans encouraged to support Radcliffe Heavyweight Rowing, Harvard Softball and Lacrosse at their home events that weekend.

"We've made great strides in 50 years, but to think about where we will be in another 50 years as we focus in more on what Title IX can be and how it can evolve from this opportunity, which has taken us this far to equality, is super critical," Jess Gelman '97, CEO of Kraft Analytics Group and former women's basketball player, said in the documentary. "So, I just want to emphasize that we're not done, and we all need to continue to celebrate Title IX and keep awareness of it."
