No. 25 Women’s Soccer Defeats Connecticut, 2-1, in Home Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Gabby DelPico and junior Josefine Hasbo each scored goals as No. 25 Harvard women's soccer beat the University of Connecticut, 2-1, in its home opener at Jordan Field on Sunday night.
 
After the Huskies (1-1-0) scored the game's opening goal in the 21st minute, the Crimson (2-0-0) responded with goals from DelPico in the 28th minute and Hasbo in the 46th minute to comeback for the win.
 
DelPico scored her first goal of the season with the equalizer while Hasbo scored her second goal in as many games to open the year with her game-winning goal standing as the 10th goal of her career.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crimson created multiple early chances including a shot from junior Josefine Hasbo that went off the left post in the 19th minute.
  • In the 21st minute, UConn scored the game's first goal as Cara Jordan sent a left-footed shot into the goal off an assist from Chioma Okafor.
  • Harvard equalized at 1-1 in the 28th minute as senior Gabby DelPico drove a shot into the goal following passes from senior Ava Lung and Hasbo.
  • The Crimson took the lead early in the second half as Hasbo stole the ball and lofted a shot into the back of the net to put the hosts up, 2-1, in the 46th minute.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Josefine Hasbo tallied three points on a goal and two assists, marking her fourth career game with three or more points. She has scored two goals in two games in 2023 and netted her 10th career goal. Hasbo has notched four game-winning goals in her career, including both of her goals this year.
  • Senior Gabby DelPico posted her first goal of the year and her ninth career goal.
  • Senior Ava Lung added an assist for her first point of the year.
  • Senior goalkeeper Anna Karpenko made two saves and improved to 2-0-0 on the year.
  • Harvard held advantages in shots (21-8) and shots on goal (7-3).

UP NEXT

Harvard women's soccer will make the trip to California for Labor Day weekend for a pair of contests on the West Coast. The Crimson will first challenge Long Beach State on Friday night (Sep. 1) before traveling up the 405 to Malibu to take on Pepperdine on Sunday (Sep. 3).
