Harvard Lights up Scoreboard Against Samford in 5-0 Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first ever meeting between Harvard and Samford on the soccer pitch, the Crimson shined, putting up five goals in a shutout effort. The Crimson (5-1-1, 0-0-0 Ivy) dominated possession from start to finish, matching their season high goal total against a Samford (4-2-3, 0-0-0 SOCON) defense that had only allowed two goals all season.

Smith Hunter scored her first career goal and Ava Lung added a goal and an assist to pace the Crimson offense in the match. Josefine Hasbo, Ólöf Kristinsdóttir, and Nicola Golen added the other tallies for the Harvard side.

Harvard will have one more out of conference test against St. John's this Sunday before it begins Ivy League play against Brown next Saturday (Sept. 23).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard and Samford met on the pitch for the first time in their histories tonight at Jordan Field. Harvard came into the contest red hot, outscoring opponents 21-4 in its last six home games. Samford came into the match red hot on the other side of the pitch, allowing zero goals its last six matches.
  • Josefine Hasbo got the Crimson started early, putting two shots on net in the first seven minutes. At 14' Gabby DelPico put two back-to-back shots on goal, followed by a Hannah Bebar attempt that was narrowly saved by the Bulldog keeper.
  • Just a minute later, Hannah Bebar fed a beautiful ball into the corner for Smith Hunter who fed a cross-box pass to Ava Lung on the back post. Lung snuck a shot around the post and a Samford defender to give the Crimson the first score of the game.
  • After another series of shots from the Crimson attack, Harvard kept its foot on the gas pedal. 24' into the action, Ava Lung found herself alone on the wing with enough room to feed a ball into the box for Gabby DelPico, who shoveled a pass off to Hasbo, who drilled a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Harvard.
  • Ten minutes later, August Hunter controlled the ball on the back line and dumped a pass off to Gabby DelPico in the middle of the field. DelPico curled a beautiful through-ball past a series of Samford defenders and onto the foot of Smith Hunter. Hunter put a shot past the Samford keeper, for the Crimson's third goal of the game and the first of her career.
  • The Crimson back line stood strong against the Samford attack, not allowing a shot on net until 35'.
  • At the half, the Crimson held a 3-0 lead and out possessed the Bulldogs 64-36. The Crimson outshot Samford 14-2 and also held the advantage on shots on target (7-1). Anna Karpenko only needed to make one save in the first half.
  • Harvard and Samford battled at the beginning of the second half. The Crimson were able to break through the Bulldog press to create a series of solid chances.
  • DelPico had a shot saved at 51', Smith Hunter had a decent chance at 54', and Jade Arose had an attempt blocked off a corner kick at 59'. Hannah Bebar and Ava Lung put back- to-back shots on net at 61', but the Bulldog keeper was able to spoil their attempts.
  • The Bulldogs and Crimson battled in the midfield for the next 15 minutes, trading possession until Susie Long broke free on the wing and drove down to the corner before feeding a cross to Kristinsdóttir who finished off the pass, scoring her third goal of the season and making it 4-0 Harvard.
  • Harvard would get its final goal at 81', courtesy of Nicola Golen, who beat the keeper on a penalty kick attempt to score her first goal of the season.
  • The Crimson would go on to hold the 5-0 lead and pick up their third consecutive victory and fifth of the season.
