Piekarski Nets Game Winner as No. 15 Field Hockey Defeats Brown 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 15 Harvard Field hockey (5-2, 2-0 Ivy) won its third straight game after defeating Brown 1-0 on Friday evening. In another exciting fourth quarter from Berylson Field, Sage Piekarski and Tessa Shahbo carried the Crimson to victory in the final frame. The first-year scored her third goal of the season while Shahbo was able to come up with a huge stop as time expired in the fourth quarter. Harvard is back in action on Sunday against No. 5 Duke.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

Harvard got its first scoring attempt with 7:29 left in the first on a corner attempt. Marie Schaefers got the first shot while Lucy Leel got a rebound on the doorstep that Brown goalkeeper Kylee Del Monte was just able to keep out.

To open the second quarter, Bronte-May Brough wired a shot off a corner attempt that was blocked by a Brown defender. Originally called a save - The referees awarded the Crimson with another corner after determining it was blocked off the foot of a Bears defender. The Crimson was unable to convert on both attempts.

Harvard was able to keep the Bears from getting a shot as of 5:51 in the second quarter.

Halfway through the second quarter, Sara Silarszka came sprinting off the bench as she made her way towards the end-line. The junior forward barely missed Lara Beekhuis at the far side of the cage. Just after that great opportunity, Avery Donahue flicked a shot on net that had Del Monte out of position, but the Crimson was unable to put away a bouncing ball inside the circle

At the half, the score remained 0-0 with the Crimson leading in shots 3-0. Harvard got its fourth corner of the game and first of the second half at 8:40 in the third quarter. Bronte-May Brough was able to get a shot off after a broken corner attempt that again was blocked by the Bears' defense.

With 9:05 left in the final frame, Emily Guckian corralled a loose ball and found first-year Sage Piekarski on the doorstep to give the Crimson the lead. Harvard had its first lead of the night with just under nine minutes to go.

Piekarski now has goals in three straight weekends and ties Lucy Leel for the team lead in goals. The pair of Guckian and Piekarski now have eight points combined over the last three games.

Brown pulled Del Monte for the extra attacker with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter as they began to add pressure.

Brown was awarded its first corner of the game with 0:58 seconds left in the final frame. Kitty Chapple came up with a huge block to protect the lead with just under 0:40 seconds to go but Brown was awarded its second corner in less than thirty seconds. Tessa Shahbo was able to swat the ball away as the clock expired to seal the win for the Crimson.
