STORRS, CT. – No. 13 Harvard field hockey (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) picked up their first top-15 win of the season by defeating No. 15 UConn (1-3, 0-0 Big East), 3-2 in an overtime thriller. Three separate Crimson players registered goals in the contest including,
Marie Schaefers who notched the game winner in the final seconds of overtime.
How it Happened
- The Crimson and the Huskies were tied in nearly every statistical category through the first two quarters of the game with either team registering four shots, three shots on goal, and three saves.
- Play picked up rapidly in the third quarter with the teams trading goals back and forth during a four-minute period to bring the game to 2-2 headed into the final quarter of regulation.
- For the second straight game Lucy Leel got things started for the Crimson, finding the goal just three minutes into the third frame. Emily Berlinghof followed suit just three minutes later.
- The Crimson received a penalty corner with just six seconds remaining in overtime and a successful conversion from Schaefers off a rebounded shot lifted the Crimson to victory as the clock ran down.
Harvard Highlights
- With her second goal in as many games, Leel already matches her goal total from a season ago.
- Notching her first goal of the season, Berlinghof brings her career goal total to six.
- Playing in just her second game all-time and making her first career start, Tessa Shahbo was in goal for the Crimson, registering four saves.
- Schaefers game winner was the first career goal for the sophomore.
- The meeting was the 36th all-time contest between the two squads. The Huskies have a substantial lead in the series with it being just the fifth win for Harvard over UConn.
- With the win, the Crimson snapped the nine-game win streak that UConn had against Harvard and is the teams first win over the Huskies since 2005.

The Crimson will return next weekend with another round of Friday and Sunday contests. Harvard will meet Liberty on Friday, September 8 at 4:00 p.m. and then close out their road trip against Virginia on Sunday, September 10 at 12:00 p.m.
