CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's basketball (8-7, 1-1 Ivy) moved to 1-1 in league play this afternoon after falling to the Princeton Tigers (12-3, 2-0 Ivy), 49-73.
Lola Mullaney led all scorers for the Crimson, notching 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field.
Despite a result not in the Crimson favor, Harvard celebrated many past Crimson women's basketball players including a special recognition of the 25
th anniversary of the 1997-98 team's historic win over No. 1 Stanford in the NCAA Tournament. Crimson nation came out in full strength selling out Lavietes for the second time this season.
How it Happened
To open the contest, the Crimson got on the board for the first time four minutes in with a layup from
Katie Krupa. As the first quarter came to a close Harvard found themselves trailing by 12 heading into the second frame.
The Crimson found its offensive flow in the next ten minutes, ultimately outscoring the Tigers 18-15.
Lola Mullaney notched her second bucket of the day to open scoring for the Crimson in the second quarter. After seeing the Tigers pull out to a 16-point lead, the Crimson went a short 6-1 over a 1:39 period to begin building momentum. Harvard rounded out the half by shooting an impressive 72.7% in the frame to cut the Tigers lead to single digits heading into the locker room.
Down double digits midway through the third quarter the Crimson pulled within seven following a
Harmoni Turner three and Mullaney's 10
th point of the night. Unfortunately, with each Harvard run, Princeton was able to respond. Despite bright moments and attempted comebacks from the Crimson the score stood at 35-51 heading into the final ten minutes.
Ultimately, the Tigers were able to hold off the Crimson attack to win the first match up of the season, 49-72.
Harvard Highlights
- Lola Mullaney got back to her scoring ways and led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field.
- Harmoni Turner joined Mullaney in double digits by adding 12 points on the night along with three rebounds.
- Elena Rodriguez had a near double-double by accumulating eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. The junior also led the team in assists with four and registered a steal and a block.
- Saniyah Glenn-Bello contributing valuable minutes as the sophomore had nine points on 3-of-6 shooting, four rebounds, a steal, and two blocks.
- As a team the Crimson had seven total blocks led by two from both Glenn-Bello and Katie Krupa.
