Women’s Ice Hockey Tripped Up at No. 6 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Harvard women's ice hockey made the trip to Lynah Rink on Saturday to battle it's Ivy League and ECAC foe, the No. 6 Cornell Big Red. The Crimson (4-16-2, 2-13-1 ECACH) scored a pair of goals off the sticks of Kaley MacDonald and Sophie Ensley but it was not enough to top the Big Red, who skated away with a 7-2 victory over the Crimson.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crimson made its annual trip to Lynah Rink this afternoon to play the second game of a back-to-back against the Big Red.
  • The Big Red stormed out of the gates, putting two quick goals on the board to take a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes.
  • Starting goaltender, Alex Pellicci, made 18 saves in the first period – including four on the powerplay – to keep the Crimson within reach.
  • Cornell added one more goal to its total late in the first period to take a 3-0 lead in the first intermission.
  • The Crimson, looking to answer and cut into the Cornell lead, was given a solid opportunity after Cornell went to the penalty box early in the frame. Despite great movement and action on the powerplay, the Crimson was stumped on both its scoring chances as the score remained 3-0.
  • Cornell added its fourth goal while shorthanded to take a 4-0 lead on Harvard.
  • Kaley MacDonald started the Harvard rally in the second period, scoring her third goal of the season and getting Harvard on the board.
  • Just under four minutes later, Harvard got another spark courtesy of Sophie Ensley, who potted her second goal in her last three games to bring the score to 4-2. Ensley's third goal of the year came off a second-chance on a breakaway set up by Jenna MacDonald and Gwyn Lapp.
  • Cornell took the air out of the Harvard comeback with one more goal late in the second period. At the 4-0-minute mark, Cornell held a 5-2 lead.
  • The Big Red would go on to add two more goals int eh third period to skate off with a 7-2 victory over the Crimson.
