ITHACA, N.Y. – Harvard Football used 21 second-quarter points to pull away from Cornell en route to a 38-20 road win at Schoellkopf Field on Friday night. The Crimson's first Ivy League win of 2024 evened its conference record at 1-1, while improving its overall mark to 3-1. The Big Red, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 (1-1 Ivy).
How It Happened
- Cornell orchestrated a 10-play opening drive that covered 83 yards and culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jameson Wang to Ryder Kurtz to help the Big Red jump out to an early 7-0 lead.
- The Crimson wasted little time in answering the Cornell TD as it drove 60 yards in 2:28, leading to a 28-yard field goal by Kieran Corr. Harvard was able to get into field goal range after Jaden Craig connected with Cooper Barkate for a 47-yard reception.
- Barkate and Scott Woods II would later be responsible for 66 of 70 yards on Harvard's next scoring drive, which ended with an open Barkate on the receiving end of a 21-yard TD pass from Craig. The scoring toss helped put the Crimson on top, 10-7, with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.
- Wang later led a quick-strike attack for Cornell, which went 54 yards in four plays that spanned 54 seconds and ended in a 10-yard rushing TD by the quarterback. The scamper gave the hosts a 14-10 lead.
- Harvard did not trail for long after Craig hit Seamus Gilmartin on a 54-yard TD pass to complete a 6-play, 75-yard scoring drive. The sophomore's first TD of his career pushed the Crimson back into the lead at 17-14 with 8:36 left in the half.
- The Craig-to-Gilmartin connection was up and running on Harvard's next possession. The Crimson marched to the Cornell 20-yard line and was faced with a 4th-and-3. Harvard went for it and the QB threw a dart in a small window to his tight end for another TD, which boosted the visitors to a 24-14 advantage with 105 seconds left before the half.
- Despite the limited time left on the clock, Harvard forced a 3-and-out and saw Woods II return the Big Red punt 18 yards to the Crimson 49. From there, Craig found Woods II for 14 yards, Barkate for 18 and then went back to Barkate for another 19, which helped the Crimson take a 31-14 lead into halftime. In totality, the scoring drive took four plays and covered 51 yards in 39 seconds.
- The Crimson added to its lead deep in the third quarter when Charles DePrima completed a 2-yard pass to Ryan Osborne. The tight end's first TD since the season opener helped Harvard push its advantage to 38-14.
- Facing a steep deficit, Cornell took over and rushed four straight times with the fourth attempt going for 39 yards. After the Robert Tucker III tote, Wang threw a 12-yard TD pass to Samuel Musungu. The Big Red's 2-point-conversion attempt, however, failed and Harvard eventually took a 38-20 lead into the final 15 minutes and through the end of the game.
