PRINCETON, N.J. – A late surge from Harvard women's soccer came up short this afternoon as the team fell on the road to its Ivy League rival, Princeton. The Crimson (5-3-5, 1-3-1 Ivy) could not overcome an early deficit as the Tigers (9-4-0, 4-1-0 Ivy) came away with a 3-1 victory.
Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir added another goal to her season total, her fifth of the season and fifth in the past six games, to lead the Crimson offense.
How It Happened
- The Crimson and the Tigers met on the pitch at Myslik Field in what was a critical matchup for both teams who are on the hunt for an Ivy League Tournament spot. It was the 49th matchup in the series history between the two Ivy League titans.
- Harvard's defense was the story of the first 20 minutes of play as the team stood tall against a relentless Tiger advance in the opening sequences. The anchor of the defense, goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart, continued her strong play between the pipes, making three saves in the first 20 minutes of play.
- Despite the strong play of the Crimson backline, the Tigers were able to sneak through and score the first goal of the match 28' into the action.
- Princeton would stay on the attack for the majority of the remaining time in the first half, adding one more goal to increase its lead to 2-0 heading into the halftime break.
- The Tigers got another break early in the second half, earning a penalty kick opportunity at the 52' mark. The team converted on the penalty to build on its lead.
- Harvard began to counter facing the deficit and converted at the 62' mark, getting its first goal of the game from Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir. The Iceland native continued her hot streak with her fifth goal of the season off a perfect cross from Nicola Golen.
- With momentum now on its side, the Crimson kept advancing deep into the attacking third to create another pair of opportunities in the next sequence. First it was Anna Rayhill who had a shot sail just wide, then it was Erin Gordon who had a shot from the top of the box collected by the Princeton keeper.
- A brief Princeton attack ended in another Rhiannon Stewart save as the clock crossed the 80' mark with Harvard still looking for a pair of goals to equalize.
- The Crimson were cut short in the final minutes as the Tigers held on to earn a 3-1 victory over the Crimson.
