No. 9 Field Hockey Defeats Boston University in Crosstown Showdown

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 9 Harvard field hockey ended its three-game homestand on a high note, as the Crimson move its winning streak to seven games with a 2-1 win against crosstown foe Boston University.

With the win, Harvard is now 9-1 through its first 10 games of the 2024 field hockey season, the best start to a season since the 2021 season.

After a scoreless first half, the Crimson offense came alive in the third quarter. Senior midfielder and team captain Emily Guckian netted the opening goal off an excellent long-range effort, as first-year forward Emily Bronckers doubled the lead just a minute later.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Throughout the first half, Harvard (9-1, 3-0 Ivy League) maintained and applied pressure, but the Boston University (5-5, 2-1 Patriot League) stood strong, as the first 30 minutes ended scoreless. After two quarters of action, the Crimson recorded six shots, four of them on goal.

Harvard's attack broke through in the third quarter, netting a pair of goals to secure the victory. With the Crimson possessing the ball in the attacking end, Guckian fired a long rang effort after dancing away from multiple defenders, as the ball flew past the BU keeper, 1-0.  A minute later, Harvard doubled its lead. Senior midfielder Maddie Mullaney danced past multiple defenders on the byline, as she found Bronckers in the circle. A native of Blaricum, Netherlands, Bronckers lifted a shot into the cage for her third goal of the season, 2-0.

The Crimson dominated in the third quarter, as the hosts recorded two goals on three shots and just one penalty corner opportunity.

In the fourth quarter, the visitors pulled a goal back. After junior goalkeeper Tessa Shahbo halted several Terrier shots in front of goal, Boston University squeaked a shot by the goal line for its first of the afternoon, 2-1.

From there, Harvard's defense tightened, as the Crimson secured its seventh straight win. Across 60 minutes, the Crimson tallied 14 shots, including 11 attempts on goal. The Crimson defense limited the visitors to just six shots, as Shahbo stopped four shots in the contest.
