Men’s Basketball Beats Colgate in Return to Lavietes Pavilion, 78-67

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First-year guard Robert Hinton tallied a game-high 18 points and career-best nine rebounds, sophomore forward Thomas Batties II scored 17 points, and junior guard Chandler Piggé posted 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds as Harvard Men's Basketball beat Colgate University, 78-67, on Friday night at Lavietes Pavilion.
 
Playing at home for the first time since its season opener on Nov. 4, the Crimson (2-4) held a 36-33 lead at halftime and expanded the margin to as large as 16 points in the second half, including using a 10-0 run early in the second stanza to gain separation from the visiting Raiders (1-4).
 
Hinton led four Crimson in double figures with his 18 points alongside nine boards and a career-high five assists, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. Batties II matched his career high with 17 points, while adding three boards, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Piggé finished with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, nine boards, and three assists, while first-year guard Tey Barbour rounded out the Crimson's double-figure scorers behind 11 points and 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point distance.

Harvard Highlights

  • First-year guard Robert Hinton tallied a game-high 18 points, career-best nine rebounds, career and game-high five assists, and two steals, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. He scored in double figures for the fourth time this year and led the Crimson in scoring for the fourth time. Hinton connected on eight or more field goals for the third time on the year.
  • Sophomore forward Thomas Batties II totaled 17 points, three rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals, while connecting on 3-of-6 3-pointers and 4-of-4 free throws. He tied his season and career high with 17 points, while scoring in double figures for the second time this year.
  • Junior guard Chandler Piggé registered 16 points, game-high nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while hitting 7-of-11 field goals. He scored in double figures for the fifth straight game, while matching his season highs in rebounds and field goals made. Piggé scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half.
  • First-year guard Tey Barbour netted a career-high 11 points, converting 3-of-6 3-pointers and 2-of-2 free throws alongside two steals. He scored in double figures for the second straight game.
  • Senior guard Louis Lesmond added five points, four boards, and four assists in his first action of the season, and senior guard Evan Nelson chipped in six points on 2-of-3 3-pointers and four boards.
  • As a team, Harvard shot 11-of-29 from 3-point distance, hitting double-figure 3-pointers for the second time this season.
  • The Crimson held advantages in rebounds (34-27), points in the paint (30-24), and points off turnovers (18-12), while leading for 30:04 of game time.
 

How It Happened

  • Neither team held a lead larger than four points in the first half until the Crimson used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 29-24 with 3:10 to go until the break. During the run, Barbour hit a 3-pointer, and Hinton and Piggé both converted layups.
  • The Crimson scored the final four points of the opening half to take a 36-33 lead into the locker room. Hinton posted nine points and seven rebounds in the first half to lead the Crimson while Barbour netted eight points.
  • After Colgate tied the score at 38-38 with 18:06 remaining, the Crimson responded with 10 straight points to make the margin 48-38 with 14:53 to play. Lesmond and Batties II both hit 3-pointers during the stretch.
  • Back-to-back triples from Batties II and Barbour kept the margin at 56-45 with 12:32 to go.
  • Still leading 58-50, the Crimson used an 8-0 spurt to gain a 66-50 lead – its largest of the game – with 7:48 left. A 3-pointer from first-year guard Ben Eisendrath and dunk from Piggé highlighted the run.
  • The Crimson maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way with a dunk from Batties II inside of the final minute helping to cap the action.
