CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 21/17 Harvard Football fell to Yale in the 140
th playing of The Game on Saturday at Harvard Stadium, 34-29. The Crimson, which entered the day riding a seven-game winning streak, finishes the season with an 8-2 record and a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, end the campaign at 7-3 (4-3 Ivy).
How It Happened
- Yale was the first to get on the scoreboard as Grant Jordan connected with Chase Nenad for the 13-yard touchdown with 12:38 left in the second quarter.
- Jaden Craig helped Harvard knot the score at 7-7 with 6:25 left in the first half, when he found an open Cooper Barkate for the 44-yard touchdown. The scoring drive took all of two plays after Scott Woods II put the Crimson on the plus side of the field after a 23-yard punt return.
- The Bulldogs moved ahead on the scoreboard on their next possession as Josh Pitsenberger rushed for an 11-yard TD, punctuating a 5-play, 76-yard drive, with 4:00 left in the second quarter. Yale ended up taking the 14-7 lead into halftime.
- Yale increased its lead to 21-7 when Abu Kamara picked off a Craig pass and returned it for a TD. The Bulldogs moved ahead by two touchdowns with 13:47 to go in the third.
- Yale added to its advantage with a 30-yard field goal from Nick Conforti with 57 seconds left in the third.
- On Harvard's first play of the fourth quarter, Craig and Woods II hooked up for a 28-yard TD. Instead of going for the PAT, the Crimson went for two, with Craig tossing a pass to Charles DePrima to get the hosts to within nine points at 24-15 with 14:52 left in regulation.
- Yale made it a 30-15 advantage with 12:41 left in the fourth when Jordan's short pass to Pitsenberger ended up covering 39 yards for the touchdown. The Bulldogs' PAT was good to make it a 31-15 lead.
- Craig and the offense continued to march forward and was rewarded for its persistence as the QB found Barkate in the back corner of the endzone for a 5-yard TD. The Crimson then converted another 2-point try when Woods II hauled in another pass. The sequence helped Harvard slice its deficit to 31-23 with 8:58 to go.
- Yale used a 36-yard field goal with 2:07 left to push its advantage to 34-23.
- With just over two minutes to orchestrate a comeback, Harvard moved the ball into the redzone, with Xaviah Bascon scampering into the endzone for the 5-yard TD. A failed 2-point attempt, however, made it a 34-29 Bulldogs edge with 18 seconds left.
- Harvard attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but Yale recovered to escape with the victory. Â
