Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Grabs Second Win of the Weekend; Defeats Illinois State, 72-62

NORMAL, Ill. – Harvard women's basketball (7-1, 0-0 Ivy) departs Illinois with another win under its belt after defeating Illinois State (2-2, 0-0 Missouri Valley), 72-62, this afternoon.
The Crimson saw scoring contributions from eight different players and were led by 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting from Harmoni Turner.  The senior guard contributed across all aspects of the game, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and collecting a pair of steals.

How it Happened

The Crimson started hot, rattling off three early triples to begin the contest up 11-2.  Harvard's play on both ends of the court continued to click throughout the frame as it held the Redbirds to single digits.  An Abigail Wright bucket off the dish from Harmoni Turner in the closing seconds of the quarter put the Crimson up 24-9 after 10 minutes.  Illinois State's offense began to cut into the Crimson lead in the opening minutes of the quarter as the home team went on a 9-0 run.  At the 6:15 mark, Harvard settled back in, using its own nine-point run to regain a double-digit advantage.  Despite offensive efforts from the Redbirds, Harvard kept its sizable lead and once again received a last second finish from Wright to secure the first-half at 37-25.  The Redbirds used the third frame to claw within striking distance, lessening the Harvard lead to as little as three heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Turner struck first in the last frame to give the Crimson a six-point cushion, but Illinois State responded with back-to-back buckets to pull within one.  Despite the Redbirds being able to tie the contest at the 6:13 mark, Harvard never allowed the home team to take the lead at any point in the game.  Led by 14 points from Turner and six points from Rodriguez, the Crimson closed out the contest and collected its fifth straight victory.
