BELFAST – Second period goals from
Joe Miller and
Cam Johnson were not enough to erase a 3-0 first period deficit as the Crimson (2-4-1, 2-2-1 ECAC) fell to Notre Dame 5-2 on Friday night in the first game of the Friendship Four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish scored three goals in nine minutes in the opening period after adding a power-play goals and two quick ones late in the period. Going up 3-0 after goals just 38 seconds apart led to a goaltending change for the Crimson to start the second period.
Ben Charette made his collegiate debut between the pipes after entering the game at the beginning of the second and would go on to make numerous big stops for the Crimson despite being untested throughout the first half of the period.
Joe Miller got the Crimson on the board just a 1:13 into the period after corralling the puck behind the net and netting a wrap around for his third goal of the season. His second in as many games, linemates
Ben MacDonald and
Casey Severo picked up the helpers on the much needed first goal for the Crimson.
Building some momentum from its first goal of the game, Harvard cut the Irish lead in half after
Cam Johnson capitalized off a turnover to add his first of the season. An unassisted marker, Johnson's goal was off of one of the many defensive zone turnovers from the Irish in the second period.
Ben Charette's first career save came off a partial breakaway late in the second period where the rookie made a great glove save. Having faced no shots throughout almost 18 minutes, Charette went on to make six saves in the final two minutes.
Notre Dame would go on to add a powerplay marker to take a 4-2 lead and eventually added an empty netter to win 5-2.
