Men’s Soccer Defeats Dartmouth in Shutout on Senior Day, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomores Andreas Savva and Dylan Tellado each scored goals in the second half as Harvard University men's soccer defeated Dartmouth College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field in its regular season finale on Senior Day.
 
In a match with significant implications for the final spot in the Ivy League Tournament, the Crimson (4-7-4, 3-4-0 Ivy) moved up to nine points in the conference standings to vault past the Big Green (5-8-3, 2-4-1 Ivy, seven points) into fourth place.
  
Savva scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 60th minute before Tellado doubled the margin in the 85th minute. Savva tallied three points on a goal and an assist, Tellado scored his team-high fourth goal of the year, and sophomore Ben Kelly added an assist.
 
As a team, Harvard posted its fourth shutout as a team this season while junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil notched his second clean sheet of the year. Senior center back Jan Riecke played the full 90 minutes and has played all 1,350 minutes on the year.
 
Prior to the game, Harvard recognized the six members of its Class of 2025 with the Crimson honoring Sam Bjarnason, Edwin Dominguez, Kristján Gunnarsson, Marko Isakovic, Jan Riecke, and Ludovico Rollo for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four seasons.
   

Harvard Highlights

  • Sophomore Andreas Savva tallied three points on the day on a goal and an assist. He scored his first goal of the season and third goal of his career. Savva notched his second career game with three points. He netted his second career game-winning goal. Savva led all players in the match in shots (seven) and shots on goal (three).
  • Sophomore Dylan Tellado scored his fourth goal of the year and now has nine points on the season, leading the team in both categories. He increased his career totals to seven goals and 15 points.
  • Sophomore Ben Kelly notched an assist and now has two assists and six points on the year.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made two saves in his second shutout of the season and fourth career clean sheet.
  • As a team, the Crimson registered its fourth shutout as a team this year.
  • Among the Crimson's field players, senior center backs Jan Riecke and Ludovico Rollo and first-year outside back Jan Riecke all played the full 90 minutes.
  • Riecke has played all 1,350 minutes on the year. For his career, he has started all 65 games since the start of the 2021 season and has played 5,905 of a possible 5,939 minutes (99.4 percent).
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (18-7), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (8-2). In the second half, the Crimson gained advantages in shots (12-5), shots on goal (6-1), and corners (5-1).

How It Happened

  • Junior goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil made his first save of the match in the 13th minute, stopping a low attempt from the Big Green.
  • Harvard pressured Dartmouth's defense in the final quarter hour of the first half with a driven shot from junior Nicholas Nyquist in the 32nd minute and another dangerous shot from sophomore Andreas Savva in the 41st minute.
  • In the first half, Harvard led in shots (6-2), shots on goal (3-1), and corner kicks (3-1).
  • Savva broke through in the 60th minute with a moment of individual brilliance. Carrying the ball from the left side into the center of the pitch, Savva fired a shot off the left post and into the goal.
  • Harvard nearly doubled its lead in the 81st minute as a shot from first-year Xavier Tanyi off a corner kick required the Big Green defense to clear the ball off the line.
  • The Crimson eventually moved ahead 2-0 in the 85th minute behind sophomore Dylan Tellado's goal. After sophomore Ben Kelly and Savva moved the ball along the end line, Tellado directed a shot into the back of the net.
