Women's Ice Hockey Comeback Falls Short at No. 11 St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – A late rally from the Harvard women's hockey team fell short tonight in a narrow loss to the No. 11 St. Lawrence Saints. The Crimson (2-9-1, 1-8-0 ECAC) scored two goals in the closing minutes but it was not enough to overcome the Saints (10-5-4, 4-1-2 ECAC) who skated off with a 4-2 victory. Sophie Ensley and Antonina Dinges scored the Crimson goals in the effort while Paige Lester increased her point streak to three games.

How It Happened

The Crimson made the long trek to Northern New York this weekend for the final ECAC series of the semester. Harvard opened up the weekend with a tilt at Appleton Arena against the national ranked St. Lawrence Saints. The game got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to maintain offensive zone pressure thanks to strong play from the defensive units. Starting goaltender, Ainsley Tuffy, made ten saves in the first period to hold off St. Lawrence. The Saints matched the effort, stopping all nine Crimson shots on net in the period as the game would head into the first intermission with no score.

St. Lawrence made its move in the second period, scoring an early goal before adding two more in the middle of the period to build a 3-0 lead just after the halfway points in the contest. The Crimson counter attack was thwarted by a number of sharp saves from the Saints' goaltender as Harvard was held scoreless once again in the second period. SLU went on to add one more tally to its total late in the period to carry a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.

Antonina Dinges finally broke through at the halfway point of the third period, scoring her third goal of the season to get the Crimson on the board. Junior Emily Davidson made a series of stops in the third period and Harvard executed a nearly perfect penalty kill to hold off St. Lawrence for the remainder of regulation. Sophie Ensley found the twine late in the third period but the Crimson comeback would fall short as the Saints skated off with a 4-2 win when the final horn sounded.
