No. 18 Harvard Puts Up 23 Goals in Win Over Merrimack

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's lacrosse used an impressive performance tonight to power themselves past the Merrimack Warriors in an eventual 23-8 victory. The Crimson (4-0, 0-0 Ivy) remain unbeaten after the offensive showcase on Tuesday night that tied a season-high with 23 goals. The defense was also spectacular in the effort, allowing Merrimack just eight goals, 15 shots and 24 ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard outshot Merrimack 19-1 in the first quarter, won 7-of-8 faceoffs and picked up 18 ground balls compared to Merrimack's four.
  • Merrimack was first on the board in second quarter, recovering from a pair of early turnovers to scores its second goal of the game at the 11-minute mark. Harvard quickly answered with a man-up goal courtesy of Liam Griffiths. The Warriors countered with another strike, but it wasn't enough to slow down the Crimson.
  • After Merrimack's third goal, Harvard would go on a 3-0 run that lasted for more than six minutes leading into the halftime break. Ip, King and Joey Graham tallied the goals to give Harvard a 11-4 lead at the halftime break.
  • Just 43 seconds into the third quarter, Malone scored his third goal of the game to get the Crimson moving in the second half. Merrimack countered with a pair of back-to-back man-up goals to bring themselves within six goals.
  • After killing off the penalty, Joost de Koning caused a turnover that led to a transition goal for Owen Guest, the first goal of the defensive midfielder's young career.
  • Sam King followed up with the 14th Harvard goal of the night before Merrimack answered with their seventh.
  • Jackson Greene and Graham Blake each netted their first goals of the night to push the Crimson to a 16-7 advantage after three quarters.
  • The fourth quarter was Harvard's from start to finish, as a number of reserve players entered and made some big plays in the final quarter.
  • Blake and Aurandt scored back-to-back goals on two of Harvard's first three possessions in the quarter before Brennan McBride and James Canipe each scored their first career goals.
  • Graham and Michael Smyth added a pair of tallies, followed by John Warner, who scored his first career goal and the Crimson's 23rd of the night.
