Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Gaffney Scores In Dying Miniutes to Send Game to Overtime, Crimson falls in Shootout

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard men's ice hockey skated to a 1-1 tie with Brown University on Saturday night at the Bright-Landry Center. The Crimson (6-17-6, 6-10-6 ECAC) outshot the Brown Bears (8-18-3, 6-14-2 ECAC) by a 44-18 margin but fell in the shootout in its final regular-season contest.
Alex Gaffney tied the game at 1-1 with 1:19 remaining in regulation to set a new career-best eight goals. Picking up one point in the conference standings, Harvard will host Princeton in the first round of the ECAC tournament on Friday, March 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard matched up against Brown for the second time this season on Saturday night, with its first meeting ending in a narrow 5-3 loss on Jan. 12.
  • Hosting its final regular-season home contest of the season, the Crimson celebrated its three seniors Ryan Drkulec, Derek Mullahy, and Max Miller for Senior Night, and Mullahy earned the start in net.
  • Harvard gained all the momentum early on during the game's first power-play attempt at 3:31, recording 10 shots on net over Brown's 5-minute major.
  • Goaltender Derek Mullahy stopped all seven shots he faced over the first 20 minutes, as the Crimson outshot the Brown Bears 17-7 in the first period.
  • Harvard turned up pressure in the final five minutes of the middle frame, and the Crimson's best chance came with 4:44 remaining. Michael Callow forced a turnover and sent the puck to fellow freshman forward and linemate Cameron Johnson for a shot attempt on the breakaway.
  • The Crimson led in second-period shots 8-6 and blocks 4-2, but the Brown Bears opened the scoring with 31.9 seconds remaining to take the 1-0 lead during 4-on-4 play.
  • Harvard's penalty kill came up big midway through the third period, killing off a 5-minute major to keep it a one-goal contest.
  • During the kill, Marek Hejduk forced a 2-on-0 situation with linemate Zakary Karpa, and the Crimson built off that pressure to eventually tie the game at 18:41 of the third.
  • Cameron Johnson's blast from the point fluttered through several bodies in front before deflecting off a Brown defender, and Alex Gaffney fired the loose puck into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The game remained knotted at the end of regulation and headed to sudden-death overtime. Harvard recorded all four shots on net during the overtime period, including two on the power play, but the game headed to the Crimson's sixth shootout of the season.
  • Brown scored twice in the shootout to take the extra point.

GAME NOTES
  • The Crimson recorded a season-high 44 shots on net to Brown's 18 shots.
  • Co-captain Ian Moore led the effort with a career-high seven shots on net, including a team-best four shots in the first period.
