CAMBRDIGE, Mass. - Harvard Women's Lacrosse charged back to defeat the Brown Bears in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon. In its first Ivy League matchup of the year, the Crimson defeated No. 24 Brown, 18-17, to open the season 4-0 for the first time since 1992.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brown took a quick 2-0 lead to start the game before Callie Hem got the Crimson on the board with her 21st goal on the season, making it 2-1.
- The Crimson and the Bears then traded goals, with Hem adding another to her tally on a free position, top-shelf strike.
- Charlotte Hodgson then tied the game up at three before Brown scored two more.
- Harvard received a goal from Maddie Barkate but fell behind at the end of the first period with the Bears leading, 6-4.
- The Crimson continued to fight in the second period, but the Bears stayed strong, outscoring Harvard once again.
- Maddie Barkate, Riley Campbell, Annabel Child, and Callie Hem all registered goals in the second period. Hem scored on a Brown woman-up advantage, completing her hat-trick, and making the score 12-8 in favor of the Bears.
- Heading into the second half down 13-8, the Crimson got off to the start it needed, cutting the deficit to three. Harvard received goals from Charlotte Hodson and Hannah Shiels on back-to-back possessions.
- Charlotte Hodgson added to the momentum swing for Harvard on another laser with five minutes left in the third period, giving herself a hat-trick on the day and bringing Harvard within two.
- Brown answered quickly with back-to-back goals to hold their lead at 15-11. The Bears scored another one at the end of the third to give them a five-goal lead once again, making it 16-11 going into the final period.
- Captain Riley Campbell scored her second goal of the day to open the final period. Callie Hem followed that with her fourth goal on a free position shot to make it a three-goal game.
- Chloe Provenzano made multiple big stops in goal for the Crimson down the stretch to add to her final tally of 12 saves and keep the Harvard squad in the game.
- Harvard continued to climb back as Maddie Barkate found the back of the net on a free position to complete her hat-trick and make it 16-14.
- Riley Campbell scored her third goal of the day to make it a one-goal game, becoming the fourth Crimson player to achieve a hat-trick on the day.
- Campbell notched her fourth to make it a tie game, 16-16, with two minutes remaining.
- Harvard was outscoring Brown 8-3 in the second half and 5-0 in the fourth quarter before Brown scored its first goal of the period to go back up by one.
- Campbell continued her hot streak with her fifth goal of the game on a free position shot to level the score once again, 17-17, with thirty seconds left.
- Harvard took its first lead of the game with ten seconds remaining off a huge goal by Callie Hem. The Crimson controlled the final draw to complete its outstanding comeback over Ivy League foe Brown to win the matchup, 18-17.
