Women's Soccer Shuts Out Marshall to Open 2024 Victorious

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Crimson opened Jordan Field in style tonight, defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd, 1-0, in its first contest of the 2024 season. Harvard picked up its seventh consecutive home opening victory in a dominant all-around effort.

Harvard's path to victory was paved by a formidable defensive showing from the starting group of Jade Rose, Erin Gordon, August Hunter and Amy König. The four defenders along with starting goalkeeper, Rhiannon Stewart, led the shutout effort, as Harvard continued to dominate on its home pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard and Marshall met for the first time in series history tonight under the lights at Jordan Field for the Crimson's home and season opener.
  • The Crimson posted the first two shots of the contest as Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez, and Nicola Golen both had great looks in scoring areas sail wide.
  • Jade Rose nearly put the Crimson up at 23', placing a header on net that found the arms of Marshall's keeper. Sarah Lloyd had a chance to clean it up, but just pushed a shot over the crossbar.
  • Josefine Hasbo picked up where she left off in 2023, scoring the first Crimson goal of the season 28 minutes into the action. Sarah Lloyd set up Hasbo with a beautiful run into the area to get her first collegiate point and assist.
  • Harvard continued to bring the pressure, making four more shot attempts in the half. Jasmine Leshnick entered as a sub and recorded two shots, both of which narrowly missed the frame.
  • The Crimson took its 1-0 lead into the halftime break, leading in shots 11-2
  • Harvard continued to advance into the attacking third after the break, getting two quick chances. Anna Rayhill had a look blocked in the first minute of action and Sarah Lloyd hit the post on a shot two minutes later as the score remained.
  • Rhiannon Stewart cleaned up both shots she faced in the second half to keep the Herd off the scoreboard.
  • Audrey Francois had the final chance of the night for Harvard but had her attempt turned aside in the 89th minute.
  • Marshall went on the attack late, trying to find an equalizer in the final ten minutes. Harvard's defensive unit was up to the task, holding off the Herd for the remainder of the contest to come away with a 1-0 win in the season opener.
