BROOKLINE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer put together an outstanding all-around effort tonight, keeping its unbeaten records in tact after a 4-0 result at Northeastern. The Crimson (2-0-1, 0-0-0 Ivy) used four goals from four different goal scorers to record its third-consecutive shutout in the victory over Northeastern (0-2-2, 0-0-0 CAA).
Lauren Muniz,
Anna Rayhill,
Anya Van Den Einde and
Jasmine Leshnick scored the goals for the Crimson who cruised to a big road win to close out the holiday weekend.
How It Happened
- Harvard made the short trip across town to battle the Northeastern Huskies tonight, in a Labor Day tilt. The Crimson and the Huskies renewed its rivalry for the first time since 2022 and the first time at the Huskie's home pitch since 2021.
- The Crimson controlled the pace of play from the first touch, quickly driving down the pitch to record its first shot on net under a minute into the action. Nicola Golen logged the shot that was saved by the Northeastern keeper. Golen had another chance just four minutes later, followed by another good look from Jasmine Leshnick, but both shots were turned aside to keep the game scoreless early in the first half.
- Harvard kept the pace for the better portion of the first half, continually creating chances deep in the Northeastern zone. After 25 minutes of play, Harvard had recorded seven quality chances, putting seven shots on goal. The team was out shooting Northeastern, 7-1, at the mark but was still looking to break onto the score sheet.
- After another handful of looks, the Crimson finally broke through, getting a goal from Lauren Muniz in the 44th minute to break the scoreless tie. Muniz's goal - the first of her young career - came after a Golen shot attempt that hit the crossbar and ricocheted wide onto the boot of Muniz. The first-year's tally gave Harvard a 1-0 lead heading into the break. The Crimson led in shots, 14-4 at the end of 45 minutes.
- The second half saw more Crimson pressure put onto the Northeastern defense as Anna Rayhill scored just two minutes into the half to give the Crimson a comfortable 2-0 lead. Rayhill scored a beautiful goal from five yards outside the 18, recording her first goal of the season.
- Harvard was not done yet, as the team went on the offensive once again. Anya Van Den Einde scored her first career goal in the 57th minute - also from outrside the 18 - to put the Crimson up 3-0. Then just 45 seconds later, Jasmine Leshnick came flying down the wing unmarked to score Harvard's fourth goal of the evening. The two goals came just 45 seconds apart and gave Harvard another insurance goal.
- The Crimson relied on its defense down the stretch to preserve the lead. The back line of Jade Rose, August Hunter, Erin Gordon and Amy Konig all played masterfully in front of starting goalkeeper, Rhiannon Stewart, who only needed to make a handful of saves in the match.
- Harvard cruised until the final whistle blew to pick up its second win of the season and its third straight over its cross-town rivals.
