Three First Half Goals Push No. 8 Field Hockey Past Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – No. 8 Harvard field hockey started its Ivy League schedule with a strong offensive showing on the road, as the Crimson defeated Dartmouth with a trio of first half goals, 3-1. Harvard fired 14 shots across 60 minutes, with nine of them on target. On the defensive end, the Crimson limited the Big Green attack to just six shots.

Junior forward Kate Oliver opened the scoring in the first quarter, as seniors Lucy Leel and Emily Guckian extended the Crimson advantage before the halftime break in the second quarter. Dartmouth scored its lone goal of the contest midway through the fourth quarter.

With the win, Harvard extended its winning streak against Dartmouth to ten matches, as the Crimson also own a 10-0 record in its last ten regular season matches against Ivy League opponents dating back to the 2022 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Strong defensive play defined the opening moments of the  first quarter, as both sides limited offensive chances. Harvard (4-1, 1-0 Ivy League) created just one corner opportunity in the first 15 minutes. Three minutes into the match, junior goalkeeper Tessa Shahbo denied Dartmouth (1-4, 0-1 Ivy League) the opening goal, as she deflected a shot away from net.

The Crimson broke through in the closing moments of the first period, as Oliver netted her second goal of the season from the top of the circle to provide Harvard the lead against the Big Green. Propelled by solid offensive play, Harvard dictated the first quarter, out shooting the hosts, 3-1.

Harvard's attack exploded in the second quarter, adding two more goals before the halftime break. Four minutes to the period, Leel collected a rebound in front of the cage, as the London, England native slotted home the chance to double lead, 2-0. Moments later, sophomore forward Sage Piekarski found Guckian for the Crimson's third lead of the contest, 3-0.

After 30 minutes of play, Harvard controlled the match against the Big Green, out shooting the hosts, 10-2, producing four corner opportunities in the process.

The third quarter saw Harvard continue to limit Dartmouth's offensive output, as the Big Green just took one shot in the frame. Midway through the fourth quarter, Dartmouth scored its lone goal of the contest, 4-1.

For the fifth straight contest, Harvard out shot the opposition, recording 14 shots compared to Dartmouth's six.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • With Saturday's win, Harvard owns a 10-game winning streak in the all-time series against Dartmouth.
  • The all-time series between Harvard and Dartmouth on the field hockey pitch is now tied, 23-23-4.
  • Oliver, Guckian and Leel all have two goals on the season after finding the back of the net against Dartmouth.
  • Guckian now has 57 career points in 61 collegiate appearances under the direction of head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden.
