CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – 1,741 fans poured into the Bright-Landry Hockey Center this afternoon to watch the Harvard Crimson take on the No. 6 Cornell Big Red, setting a new attendance record in the process. In the end, it was the Big Red (15-4-4, 11-2-3 ECACH) who came out victorious with a 6-1 win over the Crimson (2-18-2, 1-14-1 ECACH).
How it Happened
The No. 6 Cornell Big Red made its way to Cambridge to battle the Crimson in a clash of ancient eight teams. Over 1,700 fans poured into the Bright-Landry Hockey Center to watch the action and celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports day at the rink.
The Big Red came out swinging after puck drop, quickly working the puck deep into the Crimson end. Cornell scored the first goal of the game just under a minute into the action to take an early lead. The group added another tally five minutes later to build on its lead. Harvard settled it down after the opening sequences, holding possession and creating a few scoring chances on the counter.
Starting goaltender,
Ainsley Tuffy, helped the team weather the storm, making 11 saves in the period – and seven straight after the second goal – to keep Harvard within reach.
Zoe Boosamra and
Kayley Crawford had the best looks of the period for Harvard, putting shots on net from the doorstep that were blocked wide by the Cornell goaltender. The Crimson went into the intermission down but with some energy after a good series of shifts.
The Big Red added to its lead in the second period, putting three more goals on the board to build its lead up to 5-0. The Crimson recorded three shots on goal but could not break through the Cornell defense as the score held going into the second intermission.
Angelica Megdanis got the Crimson on the board late in the third period, scoring her second goal of the season.
Mia Biotti started the play with a great pass on the breakout, finding
Gabi Davidson Adams, who drove down into the slot before finding Megdanis on the wing. Megdanis lifted a shot into the top right corner, beating the Cornell goalie and getting Harvard on the board.
Cornell added one goal in the frame to take a 6-1 win back home to Ithaca.
