KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two medal-winning performances from Harvard fencing student-athletes highlighted the Crimson's time at the January North America Cup over the weekend, USA Fencing's first marquee event of the 2025 calendar year.
On the first day of competition, senior
Lauren Scruggs won yet another accolade in her young and already historic fencing career, as the Queens, New York native took home gold in the women's foil division I bracket at the January NAC. A two-time Olympic medalist, Scruggs advanced to the gold medal round after defeating Mikayla Chusid, 15-3, in the semifinals, setting up a 15-10 win over Jaelyn Liu. The 2023 NCAA Women's Foil National Champion, Scruggs currently ranks fifth in the International Fencing Federation's world rankings.
A two-time United States Fencing Coaches Association All-America honorable mention and the reigning Ivy League Women's Saber champion, junior
Zoe Kim earned a bronze medal in the division I women's saber tournament at the January NAC. Hailing from Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Kim secured a bronze medal after defeating Madison Thurgood in the quarterfinals, 15-13.
Three other Crimson also kicked-off the new year at the January NAC. Sophomore
Isabella Chin finished in 16
th in the division I women's epee competition on the final day of the January NAC. First-Year
Madison Duckett took 74
th in the division I women's saber tournament, while fellow classmate
Andrew Deng finished in 71
st in division I men's saber competition.
The Crimson make its return to collegiate competition this month, traveling to the Big Apple for the St. John's Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 19.
