HONOLULU, HI – Harvard men's volleyball opened its 2025 campaign this evening by taking on No. 4 University of Hawai'i inside the Stan Sheriff Center. The Crimson ultimately dropped to 0-1 as it fell to the Rainbow Warriors, 3-0.
How it Happened
The Rainbow Warriors got out to a hot start, notching the first three points of the match. Harvard was able to regroup and respond however, cutting its deficit to one as it gathered five of the next eight points. Harvard battled UH, never allowing its opponent to tally more than two consecutive points outside of its set opening run. Despite the pressure from the Crimson, Hawai'i claimed the opening set, 25-18.
Following a 3-1 Hawai'i lead to open the second set, Harvard bounced back by bringing the score to a tie on five separate occasions. With the frame locked at 8-8, the Rainbow Warriors utilized a 4-1 run to create another advantage. Hawai'i continued to grow its momentum in the set as a pair of 4-0 runs down the stretch helped grow their match lead with a 25-17 final decision.
Determined to force a fourth set, Harvard came out swinging as a quartet of kills from
Brian Thomas,
Owen Fanning, and
Owen Woolbert contributed to an early 7-5 lead. Hawai'i was able to regain the lead midway through the set but a fighting Harvard team put the set back to even at 15-all. Following the tie, the Rainbow Warriors broke away with a 4-1 run. The Crimson were never again able to fully cut into the lead as Hawai'i ultimately sealed the set at 20-25 and as a result, the match.
Harvard Highlights
- Logan Shepherd and Owen Fanning led the way on the offensive, tallying 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The pair of seniors each added an ace as well.
- Fanning contributed to a pair of blocks as well to follow closely behind Brian Thomas who led the team with three total blocks.
- James Bardin started his senior campaign with 26 assists, two kills, a service ace, and five digs against the Rainbow Warriors.
- In his first career match, Thomas Phung led the Crimson with eight digs.
