LOWELL, Mass. – A varied offensive display powered No. 4 Harvard field hockey to its 13
th straight victory, as five different Crimson scored a goal in a 5-1 win against UMass Lowell away from home.
After the first quarter went by without a goal, sophomore forward
Martha le Huray opened the scoring in the second quarter, as junior midfielder
Lara Beekhuis, sophomore midfielder
Tilly Butterworth, senior forward
Kate Oliver and junior forward
Sage Piekarski all followed with goals in the second half.
With the win, Harvard is now 13-0 to start the 2025 season, as the Crimson is the only remaining undefeated team in the country. This also marks the second-longest winning streak in program history, as the 2018 team rattled off 14 straight wins en route to a trip to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first quarter saw Harvard (13-0, 5-0 Ivy League) control the majority of possession, as the Crimson earned the first penalty corner of the day with just under six minutes remaining in the frame. With Oliver on the insert, the pass found senior defender
Bronte-May Brough at the top of the circle, as Brough's shot was deflected away via a pad save from UMass Lowell's first-year keeper Veerle Mous.
Harvard would earn two more penalty corners against UMass Lowell (7-7, 2-1 America East) before the conclusion of the first quarter, as the host turned away both chances to preserve the 0-0 scoreline heading into the second quarter. At the end of the opening 15 minutes from Wicked Blue Field, Harvard recorded four shots off three penalty corners, as the Crimson's defense held the hosts to zero shots in the period.
It only took 57 seconds into the second quarter for the Crimson to find the opening goal of the contest. Effective high pressing allowed Harvard to win possession on the edge of the circle, as Piekarski evaded a couple of defenders and found le Huray to put Harvard ahead, 1-0.
The 2024 Ivy League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, le Huray has now scored a goal in five straight matches, the longest goal scoring streak of her collegiate career.
The Crimson continued to find success offensively after tallying the initial goal, as Harvard ended the second quarter with six shots, all of them on goal. Defensively, the Crimson continued to excel, as Harvard only allowed two shots and one penalty corner as the Crimson carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Midway through the third quarter, Harvard capitalized on a counter attacking chance to double the lead. Beekhuis controlled a pass at the midway line and darted for the circle, as she fired a powerful strike just beneath the crossbar to put Harvard's lead at 2-0. An All-Ivy League First Team honoree last season, Beekhuis scores in consecutive matches for the third time this season.
With 3:13 left in the third quarter, Harvard manufactured back-to-back penalty corner chances, as the Crimson earned a penalty stroke on the second penalty corner of the sequence. After having her first penalty stroke of the day saved in the first half, Butterworth regrouped and converted to extend Harvard's advantage to 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Harvard's attack continued to find ways to produce penalty corner chances, as the Crimson added to lead on its first penalty corner opportunity of the fourth quarter. After Oliver inserted the ball into play, the St. Louis, Missouri native followed the rebound and slotted the chance away for her first goal of the 2025 season to put the scoreboard at 4-0 in favor of Harvard. A few minutes later saw another Crimson get their name of the scoresheet, as Piekarski tipped in a shot from Beekhuis to put Harvard up 5-0.
UMass Lowell found the back of the cage before the end of regulation, as Harvard earns its 13
th win of the year with a 5-1 win on the road. At the end of the 60 minutes, the Crimson logged 25 shots along with a season-high 12 penalty corners. Defensively, Harvard allowed just seven shots, holding an opponent under double-digit shots for the 10
th time this season.
