Women’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision Against Penn

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior forward Anna Rayhill extended her goal scoring streak to three matches as Harvard women's soccer fell just short against Penn in a 2-1 contest at Jordan Field.

Harvard battled across the whole 90 minutes, as the Crimson's attack generated 24 shots on the day, a new high this season. The Crimson defense also held the Quakers to just four shots on the afternoon, the first time Harvard has held an opponent to five shots or less since the 3-2 win against New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 14.

How it Happened

The first 45 minutes from Jordan Field saw Harvard (5-5-3, 3-2-1 Ivy League) enjoy the majority of possession, as Harvard found success down both the right and left flanks. The Crimson created the first chance of the afternoon, as a stellar dribble down the right sideline from Rayhill led to a shot on target from sophomore forward Lauren Muniz.

After Penn (5-4-5, 1-3-2) generated back-to-back corners, Harvard regained possession and pinned the Quakers back in their own end. At the 14-minute mark in the first half, the Crimson almost jumped ahead on consecutive corner kicks, as junior defender Amy König had her close-range shot saved to keep the scoreboard at 0-0.

With just under 19 minutes left in the first half, Penn opened the scoring with a strike from junior forward Abbey Cook, 1-0.

From there the Crimson battled back after allowing the opener, as Harvard registered four more shots in the final stages of the first half. The Crimson closed out the first half with eight shots as half of them were on target, as the Quakers only logged three attempts in the first half.

As it did the first half, the Crimson applied constant pressure on the Quakers to start the second half. Just a minute into the frame, senior forward Audrey Francois controlled the ball on the edge of the box, as she saw her shot get parried away by Penn's junior keeper Annabel Austen.

Moments later, Harvard found the equalizer in the 51st minute thanks to a fantastic solo effort from Rayhill. After collecting a pass on the right wing, Rayhill danced past a Quaker and fired a shot into just below the cross to level the score, 1-1. A native of New Hartford, New York, Rayhill has now scored in three straight contests.

With 19:52 on the clock, the visitors regained the lead, as junior Magali Capdevila found junior midfielder Avery Chaple to put Penn ahead for good, 2-1.

At the conclusion of the match, Harvard registered a season-high 24 shots compared to Penn's four, as the Crimson also earned 11 penalty corner chances. This also marks the second time this year that Harvard has held an opponent to five shots or less.
