ITHACA, N.Y. – Harvard women's volleyball (2-7, 1-0 Ivy) dropped its first contest of the Ivy League season, falling to Cornell (6-5, 1-0 Ivy) 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 17-25).
How it Happened
The Crimson carried the momentum of its dominant Ivy opener win into the first set of the match, pulling ahead 11-6 on the Big Red's home court. Cornell, however, settled in following the Harvard run, going on its own 5-1 run to pull within one. The Big Red would pull in front, but Harvard tied the contest twice to stay in the set late. Ultimately, as Cornell outscored the Crimson 19-10 following its five-point advantage, the Big Red would steal the opening set, 25-21.
Either team struggled to gain momentum in the second set as no lead was larger than two until Cornell went on a late 5-0 run to pull within two of match point. The Big Red would then grab two of the final three points and close out set two at 25-19.
Cornell grabbed control early in the final set, exploding out to a 14-5 lead. Harvard was able to chip away at the lead, pulling within three at 20-17. The Big Red, however, gained enough distance to hold onto its lead, taking the final set, 25-17.
Harvard Highlights
- Sofia Rossi secured double-digit kills in the three-set contest, recording 11 kills while hitting at a .320 clip.
- Brynne Faltinsky and Ryleigh Patterson each added six kills.
- Patterson registered her kills while hitting .375 and also added an ace and two blocks in her first contest back in nearly a month.
- Faltinsky also contributed by recording a team-best seven digs.
- Bridget Egan notched an impressive three aces in the contest.
