CANTON, N.Y. – Harvard women's ice hockey picked up a hard-fought ECAC victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Lawrence, 1-0, at Appleton Arena. The Crimson (3-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC) earned their first conference win of the season behind a standout performance from sophomore goaltender
Izzy Whynot, who recorded a career-best 34 saves to secure her first collegiate shutout.
Emily Hamann's first period goal would prove to be the game-winner and send Harvard back to Cambridge with three points in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson hit the road this afternoon, traveling to Canton, N.Y. to take on St. Lawrence in its fourth ECAC contest of the 2025–26 season. The Landry Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Ice Hockey, Laura Bellamy, turned to first-year goaltender
Izzy Whynot, who made her second career start between the pipes and delivered a performance to remember.
It was a fast start for Harvard, which struck just four minutes into the opening period.
Emily Hamann opened the scoring with her third goal of the season, burying a rebound in front off a setup from
Ella Lucia and
Annie Sun to give the Crimson an early 1-0 lead. The Crimson continued to build momentum from there, generating multiple looks off the rush and holding St. Lawrence to limited second-chance opportunities. Harvard skated into the first intermission with an 8-9 deficit in shots but a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
The middle frame featured steady defensive play from both sides as the Crimson weathered sustained pressure from the Saints. Whynot stood tall in net, turning away all nine shots she faced in the period, including a pair of highlight-reel saves to preserve the lead. Harvard's penalty kill remained perfect on the day, denying St. Lawrence on its lone power play chance while limiting rebound opportunities around the crease.
In the third period, St. Lawrence made a late push, firing 16 shots on goal and pulling its goalie in the final minutes in search of the equalizer. The Crimson defense held firm, blocking shots in key moments, led by
Emi Biotti,
Scout Oudemool, and
Keira Ley, while Whynot continued her stellar outing, stopping everything sent her way to secure her first collegiate shutout.
Behind Whynot's 34-save performance and Hamann's first-period tally, Harvard (3-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC) earned its first conference victory of the season with a 1–0 win over the Saints (5-6-1, 3-1-0 ECAC). With the win, Harvard secured its first victory in ECAC play, while St. Lawrence suffered its first conference loss of the season.
