No. 4 Field Hockey Advances to NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals with an 8-2 Win Against New Hampshire

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For a third consecutive year, No. 4 Harvard field hockey is heading to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, as the Crimson rally for an 8-2 win against New Hampshire in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament.

After falling behind 2-0 against the Wildcats midway through the second quarter, Harvard bounced back with eight unanswered goals, including four goals in the fourth period. The Crimson's eight goals against the Wildcats are the most for Harvard in an NCAA Tournament match in program history. Harvard's triumph in the NCAA Tournament First Round marks the 18th win for the Crimson this season, setting a new school record for wins in a single season.

Individually, junior forward Sage Piekarski netted three goals, representing the first hat trick for a Crimson in the NCAA Tournament in program history. Sophomore forward Emily Bronckers recorded two goals, her first multi-goal effort of the season, as senior defender Bronte-May Brough, sophomore forward Martha le Huray and sophomore midfielder Tilly Butterworth all added goals as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
While Harvard (18-1, 7-0 Ivy League) maintained possession and recorded the first four shots of the contest in the first quarter, it was New Hampshire (12-7, 4-1 America East) that produced the first two goals of the day in the second quarter. New Hampshire's first-year forward Marlijn Swaan orchestrated the opening goal just a minute into second quarter, as the Wildcats doubled their lead to 2-0 with a strike from senior forward Brecken Calcari just six minutes later.

Harvard immediately bounced back, getting on the scoreboard only two minutes after New Hampshire's second goal. On the Crimson's first attacking penalty corner of the day, Piekarski popped Brough's attempt up in the air in front of goal and slapped the ball into the cage to cut the deficit to 2-1.

An incredible counter attacking effort from the Crimson leveled the score heading into the halftime break. With Brough controlling the ball in the Crimson's defensive end, the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Year spotted runs down the field and launched an aerial pass into the offensive end. With the ball about to trickle past the end line, Piekarski dove and tipped the ball into the cage to equalize the score, 2-2, with a sensational goal.

After two periods of action at Berylson Field, Harvard recorded 11 shots, holding the visitors to just two shots and one penalty corner across 30 minutes of action at Berylson Field.

It only took two and a half minutes into the second half for Harvard to take its first lead of the afternoon. Harvard cashed in on another attacking penalty corner, as this time Butterworth fired off a low shot into the cage to put the Crimson up, 3-2. Harvard's fourth goal of the day arrived on an attacking penalty corner with Brough converting on a long-range effort, extending the Crimson's lead to 4-2 after three quarters.

Harvard owned the third period, logging two goals on nine shots and seven attacking penalty corners while holding the visitors to just one shot in the frame.

Harvard ended the NCAA Tournament First Round clash with an eventful fourth quarter, as the Crimson tallied four goals on four shots in the final 15 minutes of regulation at Berylson Field.

The scoring run in the fourth quarter started with a goal from le Huray, her 12th of the year, as Bronckers would score back-to-back goals within four minutes of each other. Harvard's scoring for the day concluded with Piekarski wrapping up the first ever hat trick for a Crimson in an NCAA Tournament match.

Harvard moves onto the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals with an 8-2 win against New Hampshire, as the Crimson outshot the visitors, 24-9. Piekarski's hat trick is the first for the Crimson this season, as Bronckers scores multiple goals in a single game for the first time this year.
