PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Crimson had the No. 13 team in the nation on the ropes but could not hold off a late rally in an eventual overtime defeat to the Brown Bears. The Crimson (5-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC) got two goals from
Morgan McGathey, but it was not enough to topple the Bears (7-2-1. 3-2-1 ECAC) who escaped with a 4-3 victory. The Crimson still took a point out of the matchup and four of a potential six on the weekend.
How it Happened
The Crimson made its way to Providence this afternoon to battle the No. 13 Brown Bears in the second game of back-to-back matchups against ranked opponents. Harvard was coming off a 4-1 victory against the No. 10 Yale Bulldogs and hoped to carry the momentum into today's tilt with the Bears.
A slow start saw the teams battle in the neutral zone for most of the opening six minutes.
Morgan McGathey broke the silence at the six-minute mark, tipping in a pass from
Elle Sproule to score the game's first goal. On an attempted Brown breakout pass, Sproule got her stick on the puck in the attacking zone before weaving through a few Bear defenders and finding McGathey in front for the strike. The Bears answered just two minutes later, leveling the score at one goal apiece.
Under thirty seconds later, McGathey answered for the Crimson again, scoring her second goal of the game to put the Crimson back on top. The first-year tapped home a great feed from
Bella Finnegan to make the score 2-1 in favor of Harvard. The Bears did not shy away, adding another tally late in the period to equalize heading into the first intermission.
After a back-and-forth opening frame,
Izzy Whynot settled in between the pipes, making save on all seven shots that came her way in the second period. The first-year netminder kept the Bears off the board and opened the door for Harvard to make a move. This time, it was
Zoe Boosamra who provided the spark for Harvard, capitalizing on another Brown turnover and turning it into the go-ahead goal. An errant pass off the boards came right out in front of the net where Boosamra was set up. The captain lifted a shot into the top left corner to put Harvard in front. Her tally gave the Crimson a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
The battle continued in the third, with both defenses standing tall in the contest. Only eight shots on goal were logged in the final frame as the tension began to rise down the stretch. Brown finally broke through six under six minutes to go, getting the game-tying goal late in the third period to send the game into overtime. The Bears would find the game-winner in the overtime period to escape Meehan Auditorium with a 4-3 win over the Crimson.
