Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Strong Start Propels Women's Ice Hockey Past Union

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's ice hockey turned in a dominant effort on home ice Friday afternoon, striking three times in the opening period on its way to a 4-2 victory over Union. The Crimson (7-5-1, 4-4-1 ECAC) received goals from four different skaters and another strong showing from goaltender Ainsley Tuffy, who recorded 25 saves in the win. With the victory, Harvard collected three more points in ECAC play and continued its home success inside Bright-Landry.

How It Happened

Harvard wasted no time establishing control, scoring just 48 seconds into the contest. Morgan McGathey opened the scoring when she cleaned up a loose puck in front, giving the Crimson an early 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, the advantage doubled. Zoe Boosamra buried a shot from the slot off a steal in the attacking zone to push the lead to two and continue Harvard's early surge.

Harvard made it 3-0 at the 13:36 mark of the first when Angelica Megdanis buried a rebound opportunity off a shot from Ella Lucia, capping a dominant opening frame in which the Crimson held a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Crimson added its fourth and final tally midway through the second period. Carla McSweeney struck at 9:01, finishing a feed from Annie Sun to give Harvard a 4-0 cushion.

Union broke through on the power play later in the period to cut the deficit to 4-1. The visitors added another goal early in the third, but Tuffy and the Crimson defense held firm the rest of the way, turning aside eight third-period shots to secure the 4-2 win.
