Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Ice Hockey Falls Short in Loss at No. 13 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Crimson defense continued its strong play, holding a top-ranked Princeton offense to just two goals but it was not enough to pull off the upset in an eventual 2-0 defeat on the road. Harvard (2-20-2, 1-16-1 ECACH) put 21 shots on goal and created several great scoring opportunities but was held off by the Tigers (16-8-1, 10-7-1 ECACH). Ainsley Tuffy made 25 saves in another strong goaltending effort while Keira Ley led the defensive group with four blocked shots in the effort.

How it Happened

The Crimson made the trip to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers inside Hobey Baker Rink on the back-half of its ECAC weekend series. It was the second meeting of the season between the Ivy rivals and the 100th meeting between the two teams in series history.

The Tigers struck first early in the opening period, sneaking a shot past starting Crimson goaltender, Ainsley Tuffy, to take an early lead. Tuffy settled in after the first goal, making nine saves in total during the first 20 minutes. Harvard's defense helped out in a big way during the opening frame, killing off two penalties and blocking 10 shots. Despite its strong defensive stand, the Crimson allowed one more Tiger goal as Princeton carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Harvard came out strong in the second period, going straight on the offensive to create a few good scoring chances.. The Crimson put 12 shots on target in the second but was held off the scoreboard. The group logged several grade A chances but was held off after a number of challenging saves from the Princeton goaltender. Tuffy was excellent in the second frame as well, making seven saves to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of Princeton after 40 minutes played.

The teams went back and forth for a majority of the third period, trading chances, none of which resulted in goals. The Crimson penalty kill unit stepped up to kill two Tiger powerplays in the third period to keep Harvard within striking distance. After pulling Tuffy in the final minutes of the period, Harvard unleashed an onslaught of shots at the Princeton net. Five shots were put on goal in the final 70 seconds of the game, but the Crimson couldn't punch one in as the Tigers held on for a 2-0 win.
