CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's ice hockey team went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's best tonight but eventually fell after a battle with the No. 7 St. Lawrence Saints. The Crimson (2-24-2, 1-20-1 ECAC) will now move into postseason play after falling to the Saints (19-10-5, 13-6-3 ECAC) in the regular season finale.
Zoe Boosamra and
Emily Hamann both pocketed goals in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson closed out its regular season schedule this afternoon by welcoming in the No. 7 St. Lawrence Saints to the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Harvard was looking to knock off another ranked team to gain some momentum heading into the ECAC playoffs that will begin next weekend.
The Saints came out of the gates strong, putting 10 shots on net in the first ten minutes of the contest. Starting goaltender,
Emily Davidson, was up to the task and cleaned up all the Saints' shots in the early going. Just after the media timeout in the first period,
Zoe Boosamra put the Crimson in front, beating the goaltender to the top right corner. St. Lawrence leveled the score late in the first period to send the squads into the intermission locked in a 1-1 tie.
The Crimson came out of the break with energy, quickly taking possession of the puck and putting two shots on goal. St. Lawrence put a stop to Harvard rush by taking the lead with a goal just after the five-minute mark in the frame. The Saints added one more goal three minutes later to build a 3-1 lead. Harvard looked to counter, putting four more shots on net but could not convert as St. Lawrence held its lead. The Saints added one more goal towards the end of the period to build a 4-1 advantage heading into the second intermission.
Back-to-back goals from St. Lawrence helped them build a 6-1 lead early in the third period. Harvard fought back with a strike from
Emily Hamann late in the period. The first-year tipped home a rebound off a
Kaley MacDonald shot from the point, scoring Harvard's second goal of the game. The Saints held on to take a 6-2 victory against the Crimson.
