ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Lizzie Francioli made eight saves in the second half as the Crimson upset No. 15 Navy on the road by a score of 11-9 on Sunday afternoon.
Charlotte Hodgson registered the game-winning goal after converting on a free position shot after a back-and-forth competitive game that saw it tied at nine heading into the final quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Grace and
Caroline Mullahy opened the scoring for the Crimson after netting the first two goals. The duo made two good cuts into the slot to get open and find the back of the net to have the Crimson offense off and running.
Callie Batchelder and
Charley Meier added two more for Harvard after being left alone inside to stretch the Harvard lead to 4-2. Navy would add two more goals to tie the game at four at the end of the first quarter.
Nicole Giannakopoulos added the first goal of the second quarter before
Callie Batchelder finished off an incredible individual effort to regain the two-goal lead.
The Crimson went up 8-4 after some nice passing in the offensive zone found
Stella Shea moving towards the net on a cut. Its biggest lead of the game, the Crimson would take an 8-7 lead into the half after Navy fought back in the final nine minutes of the quarter.
Lizzie Francioli would be stellar between the pipes the rest of the way after only allowing two goals in the final two quarters of action. Tied at 9 in the fourth quarter, a free position goal from
Charlotte Hodgson and another impressive individual effort from
Grace Mullahy gave Harvard a two-goal lead heading into the final stretch.
Francioli made numerous big saves in the final four minutes of play to preserve the two-goal lead and help the Crimson upset the nationally ranked Midshipmen.
