CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stella Shea netted the game-winning goal in overtime to help No. 24 Harvard defeat No. 23 UConn by a score of 13-12 on Wednesday.
Down with just over a minute to go, Harvard scored two consecutive goals at the end of the fourth and beginning of overtime to pick up its second-ranked win of the season and second consecutive ranked victory.
The Crimson prevailed in a back-and-forth game that saw Harvard have eight different goal scorers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson trailed 3-2 after the first quarter of action, with
Callie Batchelder and
Caroline Mullahy scoring the two goals in the opening 15 minutes for the Crimson. Netting both on free position attempts, the Crimson started the game by going three for three on free position looks.
Harvard picked up its first lead of the game early in the second quarter after
Tori Balser converted on the third free position look before
Hannah Shiels found the back of the net for her second goal of the year. Goals in back-to-back possessions gave Harvard a 4-3 lead, but the Huskies quickly answered with two goals of their own to regain the one-goal lead.
Charlotte Hodgson picked up her seventh goal of the season to knot the game at five after an amazing individual effort. Harvard began the game with five goals from five different players before Hodgson scored her second goal of the game to give the Crimson yet another lead. On a pass from
Caroline Mullahy, Hodgson found space inside and found the back of the net for the fourth lead change in a quarter and a half.
Grace Mullahy and
Callie Batchelder netted two goals at the end of the quarter to give Harvard an 8-7 lead heading into the half.
The Crimson came out firing in the third quarter, scoring twice on its first three possessions to give Harvard a 10-7 lead.
Stella Shea and
Callie Batchelder scored the first two Crimson goals, while
Charley Meier picked up her first of the evening to give the Crimson its third goal of the third quarter.
The Huskies fought back and made it 11-9 heading into the fourth quarter. UConn scored the first two goals of the final quarter to tie the game at 11 with just over eight minutes left to play.
UConn took its first lead since it was 7-6 in the second quarter on a deflection that just beat Lizzie Francoli, giving the Huskies a 12-11 lead with 1:42 to play.
Charley Meier tied the game with 1:42 left in the game after a great pass from
Callie Batchelder.
In overtime,
Annabel Child started the clear for the Crimson after getting a stop to send Harvard the other way. On the fast break, Child found Batchelder, who fed
Stella Shea in the slot as the sophomore picked the corner to win the game for the Crimson.
