Baseball Battles Northeastern in Three-Game Set, Drops Series Finale, 8-4

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Senior Matt Giberti and junior Gio Colasante each tallied two hits, and sophomore Jack Rickheim posted a pair of RBIs, but Harvard University baseball dropped an 8-4 decision to Northeastern University on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in the series finale.
 
Completing its first series in the New England region, the Crimson (0-12) pulled within 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh before the host Huskies (11-6) scored three of the contest's final four runs.
 
For the Crimson, Giberti went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk while Colasante finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. On the mound, junior left-hander Brian Dowling threw 4.1 innings in the start, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

How It Happened

  • Northeastern opened the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the first.
  • The Huskies added a run in the each of the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead 3-0.
  • Harvard cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the sixth. After Giberti reached with a bunt single, Cooper moved him to third with a single before Rickheim brought Giberti home with a ground ball.
  • The hosts used a two-run home run in the last of the sixth to make the margin 5-1.
  • The Crimson pulled within 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Following base hits from Colasante and Wilson, a ground ball from Shulman brought in Colasante before Giberti worked a walk with the bases loaded to plate Wilson.
  • Northeastern moved the difference to 6-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Harvard threatened in the top of the eighth, putting runners on first and second with no outs before the Huskies escaped the jam.
  • The hosts tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the last of the eighth to move ahead 8-3.
  • The visitors scored the game's final run In the top of the ninth. Fang and Giberti led off the inning with base hits before Mooney – who came on as a pinch runner for Fang – came around to score following a ground ball from Rickheim.
