Men’s Soccer Completes Comprehensive Foreign Tour of Italy, Germany

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University men's soccer embarked on a 10-day foreign tour of Italy and Germany from March 14-23 with stops including Milan and Como in Italy as well as Dortmund in Germany as part of a comprehensive international experience.
 
In a trip made possible through the support of friends of the program, Harvard's time in Europe included three competitive matches – with two in Italy against youth sides from AC Milan (March 18) and Como (March 20) prior to a final contest against Borussia Dortmund (March 21) in Germany.
 
The Crimson also took in two high-level fixtures as spectators as the program attended a match between AC Milan and Como at the San Siro on March 15 prior to viewing the first leg of a Nations League quarterfinal between the national teams of Italy and Germany on March 20.
 
Harvard's tour of Italy and Germany included several other cultural experiences, opportunities to interact with local communities and alumni, and visits to the facilities of two of the most storied clubs in Europe – AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

Day 1: March 14 | Departing North America

  • Harvard departed Boston on March 14 and landed in Milan, Italy – a city of approximately 1.3 million people in Italy's northern Lombardy region – on March 15.

Day 2: March 15 | AC Milan vs. Como

  • As part of the Crimson's arrival in Italy on March 15, Harvard made its way to San Siro – the largest football stadium in Italy – to watch perennial Serie A contender AC Milan host Como with the Crimson enjoying a special reception as part of the match.

Day 3: March 16 | First Training Session & Alumni Gathering

  • During its first full day in Italy on March 16, the Crimson trained as a team in the morning for its first training session on European soil.
  • The program then took part in an alumni reception in the evening, connecting with the broader Harvard community abroad.

Day 4: March 17 | Second Training Session & Lake Como Tour

  • Following another training session on March 17 – with Marcos Ojea Quintana going mic'd up for the practice – the Crimson took a boat tour of Lake Como – known for its dramatic scenery and historic villas.

Day 5: March 18 | Milan Duomo and Match vs. AC Milan

  • After visiting the Milan Duomo – the largest church in the Italian Republic – Harvard met AC Milan's U18 side in its first match of the trip on March 18. The Crimson netted three goals in the victory.
  • Following the day's morning tour and afternoon match, the Crimson closed the evening with a pizza making session with Matus Vician serving as the mic'd up host for the night.

Day 6: March 19 | Final Training Session in Italy and Pizza Making

  • In between match days in Italy, Harvard trained at Vismara – the home of AC Milan's youth teams – with goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil acting as the session's mic'd up host.
  • Following the day's morning training session, the Crimson closed the evening with a pizza making session with Matus Vician serving as the mic'd up host for the night.

Day 7: March 20 | Match vs. Como and Nations League Quarterfinals

  • During the program's final full day in Italy on March 20, Harvard squared off with Como's U19 side in the early afternoon prior to taking in the first leg of the UEFA Nations League quarterfinal between Italy and Germany at the San Siro. The German side captured a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the host Italians.

Day 8: March 21 | Arrival in Germany, Dortmund Tour and Match

  • Harvard traveled from Milan to Dusseldorf, Germany on March 21. Following its arrival, the Crimson headed to Dortmund, Germany to tour Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park prior to meeting a Dortmund youth side in the team's final match of the tour.

Day 9: March 22 | Visiting the Footballnaut at Dortmund

  • During its one full day in Germany on March 22, the Crimson visited the Footballnaut – technology that helps Borussia Dortmund's youth academy train smarter.

Day 10: March 23 | Departing Europe

  • The Crimson bid farewell to Europe on March 23 with an opportunity to look forward to three more home domestic matches – vs. Bentley (March 31), Massachusetts (April 5), and Boston College (April 26) – to round out its competitive spring slate.
