Baseball Battles Cornell, Falls in Series Finale, 14-13

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior George Cooper went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, senior William Lybrook tallied three hits, three RBIs, and a home run, and junior Jordan Kang hit a homer for the second straight game, but Harvard University baseball fell to Cornell University, 14-13, on Sunday afternoon at O'Donnell Field in the series finale.
 
Facing a 13-6 deficit through six innings, the Crimson (8-22, 5-9 Ivy) scored seven of the game's final eight runs – including a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth – but the visiting Big Red (11-16, 6-9 Ivy) held on for the decision as Harvard closed out a six-game homestand.
 
Harvard still took the three-game series, 2-1, after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, 8-5 and 9-8. For the series, the Crimson hit .384 as a team with 30 runs, 43 hits, 27 RBIs, five homers, and five doubles. The Crimson tallied double-figure hits in all three games of the series with 11 hits in game one, 14 hits in game two, and a season-high 18 hits in game three.
 
Cooper finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs, and two doubles while Lybrook recorded a 3-for-5 day with three RBIs, a home run, and a run. Senior Matt Giberti went 3-for-6 with a season-high three runs, two RBIs, a double, and two stolen bases, Kang hit his fifth homer of the year, and senior Sawyer Feller and sophomore Jack Rickheim each added two hits.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior George Cooper finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs, two doubles, and a walk. He registered season highs in hits (four), RBIs (three), runs (three), and doubles (two). For the series, he hit .533 (8-for-15) with seven runs, three RBIs, and three doubles.
  • Senior William Lybrook recorded a 3-for-5 day with three RBIs, a home run, and a run. He hit his first home run of the season and the ninth of his career. For the series, he hit .545 (6-for-11) with eight RBIs and a home run.
  • Senior Matt Giberti went 3-for-6 with a season-high three runs, two RBIs, a double, and two stolen bases. He improved to 14-for-16 on stolen base attempts this year and posted his third three-hit game of the year. Giberti hit .438 (7-for-16) in the series with five runs and three RBIs.
  • Junior Jordan Kang hit a home run for the second straight game with a two-run shot. He hit his fifth homer of the year and seventh of his career.
  • Senior Sawyer Feller compiled two hits, a double, and a run. For the series, he hit .455 (5-for-11) with three runs.
  • Sophomore Jack Rickheim added two hits and a run.
  • Junior Gio Colasante contributed a hit, an RBI, a run, and a walk at the plate.
  • Sophomore Tyler Shulman tacked on a hit, an RBI, and a run, while reaching twice on a hit by pitch.
  • First-year Liam Wilson chipped in a hit and a run.
  • The Crimson set season highs in Ivy-only play this year in runs (13), hits (18), RBIs (12), and doubles (four).
  • Five members of the Crimson tallied multi-hit games and four players posted multi-RBI days.
  • Harvard tallied double-figure hits in all three games of the series with 11 hits in game one, 14 hits in game two, and 18 hits in game three. The Crimson has now notched double-digit hits in four straight games.
 

How It Happened

  • Cornell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind a solo home run.
  • The Big Red moved ahead 2-0 with an RBI single in the top of the second.
  • Harvard countered with three runs in the bottom of the third to capture a 3-2 advantage. Giberti started the frame's scoring with an RBI single to right field before Cooper sent a two-run double into left center.
  • The visitors re-gained a 5-3 edge behind three runs in the top of the fifth.
  • The Crimson answered in the bottom of the fifth as Lybrook lifted a three-run home run over the wall down the right field line, pushing the hosts back ahead, 6-5.
  • Cornell tallied eight runs in the top of the sixth to claim a 13-6 lead.
  • Harvard trimmed the margin to 13-10 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. After both Colasante and Shulman hit RBI singles to initiate the stanza's scoring, Kang blasted a two-run home run over the wall in right field.
  • The Crimson plated one run in the bottom of the eighth on a ground ball from Shulman to pull within 13-11.
  • The Big Red scored once in the top of the ninth to move the margin to 14-11.
  • Harvard continued to battle in the bottom of the ninth, scoring twice to pull within 14-13 before the visitors held on for the decision. Giberti and Cooper each posted RBI singles in the final frame.
