JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Harvard women's volleyball (0-1) fell, 3-0, to Howard (2-2) in its opening match of the UNF Invitational and its 2025 campaign.
How it Happened
Howard took the lead early on, utilizing a 6-1 run to secure an 11-5 advantage. The Crimson responded instantly, staging its own dominant run to pull within one at 11-10. Despite nearly evening the score, the Bison gained back the momentum with a 15-11 lead and went on to control the remainder of the opening set. The foe's lead grew to as many as nine, but a late 3-0 Harvard run solidified the first set 25-18 in favor of the Bison.
Despite falling in the first,
Ryleigh Patterson was a bright spot in the Crimson's offense, producing five kills off a .625 hitting percentage. Additionally,
Sophia Wei and
Sofia Rossi made their collegiate debuts in the opening set.
The Crimson and the Bison were in a back-and-forth battle through the opening points of the second set but a massive 10-0 Howard run opened the frame. The foes held a comfortable 19-11 advantage, but Harvard never went away. With a 7-1 run, the Crimson pulled within three late, but the Bison regrouped and secured the second set 25-20. Harvard received another strong individual offensive effort, this time with six kills from junior
Ali Farquhar.
As the Crimson battled to extend the match and the Bison looked to complete the sweep, the final set was a start-to-finish battle. Neither team held a lead larger than three throughout the frame and there were 12 total ties. Ultimately, the Bison recorded the final four points of the contest, claiming the final set 25-22.
Harvard Highlights
- Ali Farquhar and Ryleigh Patterson both had strong starts to their junior campaigns. With an identical .412 hitting percentage, the Crimson duo contributed a combined 17 kills in the contest.
- On the defensive side, sophomore Taylor Larkin recorded a team-high five blocks.
- Hannah Nguyen had a strong day on the service line providing three aces across three sets.
- Bridget Egan, Sofia Rossi, and Sophia Wei each made their collegiate debuts against the Bison.
