CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's ice hockey battled against the nationally ranked Princeton Tigers on the road this evening, but came up short in an eventual 3-1 defeat. The Crimson (10-9-1, 5-7-1 ECAC) put up a fight against the No. 9 Tigers (16-4-0, 11-2-0 ECAC) but could not pull off the upset after its third-period comeback bid fell short.
Carla McSweeney scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season while
Ainsley Tuffy backed the effort with 34 saves between the pipes.
How it Happened
The Crimson made the trip down to New Jersey this evening to battle the No. 9 Princeton Tigers inside Hobey Baker Rink. Harvard was looking to put an end to the Tigers' 11-game winning streak tonight in the first meeting between the Ivy rivals this season.
Both teams got started quickly, racing up and down the ice and throwing quality looks on either net. Three Harvard chances were cleaned up by the Princeton goalie and the Crimson's starting netminder,
Ainsley Tuffy, made five saves in the early going to hold off the Tigers. Princeton struck first in the opening period, putting back-to-back goals on the board to take a 2-0 lead. The goals came within 15 seconds of one another to help the Tigers build an early advantage. The Crimson looked to counter as
Morgan McGathey and
Antonina Dinges each had great scoring chances turned away in the frame. Princeton kept the surging Crimson offense off the board in the period to carry its advantage into the intermission.
The Tigers added their third goal early in the second period to build its lead up to 3-0. Tuffy began to settle in after the goal, stringing together several impressive saves. The Crimson could not convert on its chances in the second frame, but 16 saves from Tuffy kept Harvard within reach heading into the final period.
Harvard looked to mount a late comeback bid in the contest, getting its first goal of the game just over halfway into the third period from
Carla McSweeney. The first-year tipped in a shot on the powerplay - off a crafty pass from
Kaley MacDonald - to get the Crimson its first goal of the game. The group kept charging forward, creating several high-danger scoring chances, but it was not able to convert as Princeton skated away with a 3-1 victory.
