CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's hockey earned a key road win over No. 12 Cornell this evening behind a pair of impressive performances from sophomore
Ainsley Tuffy and junior captain,
Zoe Boosamra. Tuffy made 48 saves between the pipes and Boosamra notched her first career multi-goal game to lead the Crimson (12-12-2, 6-10-2 ECAC) to a 3-1 upset win over Cornell.
How it Happened
The Crimson made its way to Lynah Rink this afternoon to close out its ECAC weekend series with a matchup against the Cornell Big Red. Harvard and Cornell faced off in an Ivy League showdown with three key ECAC points on the line.
Starting Crimson goaltender,
Ainsley Tuffy, settled in early in the contest, making a trio of early saves and eventually working her first period total up to 10 saves. Harvard countered with several strong chances of its own, two of which came from the top line of
Elle Sproule,
Morgan McGathey and
Carla McSweeney. In the middle of the frame, Harvard took advantage of a powerplay opportunity, potting the first goal of the game to take an early lead.
Zoe Boosamra scored the goal for Harvard after an offensive zone faceoff win by her linemate
Gwyn Lapp. Cornell countered with its first goal late in the period to send the teams into the locker room tied at one.
Tuffy continued her strong play in the second period, keeping the Big Red off the board with another 15 saves in the frame. Harvard countered with 12 shots of its own in the period, one of which was the go-ahead goal.
Zoe Boosamra tallied the goal after a great forecheck from
Ella Lucia freed up the puck. Lucia found a cutting Boosamra on the wing and the junior captain didn't squander the opportunity, threading a shot into the twine to put Harvard on top.
Carla McSweeney nearly had another Crimson tally just seconds after the Boosamra goal, but the goal would be overturned after a review. Harvard held onto the lead after 40 minutes, keeping a 2-1 lead after two periods.
The Big Red came out swinging in the third period, putting chance after chance on goal but were continuously turned away by Tuffy. The sophomore put on a goaltending clinic in the final period, making 22 saves in the period to preserve the Crimson advantage.
Keira Ley iced the game late in the period with an empty net goal that was scored from the other end of the ice. The Crimson's third goal of the night put the game on ice and gave Harvard a massive victory over the No. 12 team in the nation.
