CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's hockey is skating away from the Bright-Landry Hockey center victorious after
Emi Biotti scored the game-winning goal in with 0.2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Crimson to a 2-1 result. The Crimson (9-7-1, 6-4-1 ECAC) stunned Brown (11-8-1, 7-5-1 ECAC) behind a masterful effort from
Ainsley Tuffy, who made 35 saves between the posts to anchor the defense.
Zoe Boosamra scored the other Crimson goal in the third period to tie the score and keep Harvard in the contest.
How it Happened
An Ivy League rivalry was reignited this evening in a clash between Harvard and Brown. The Crimson opened a packed weekend by welcoming the Bears to the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in the team's return to ECAC action.
After a slow start for both teams, the Harvard offense began to click in the attacking zone. Harvard put seven shots on goal in the first frame – not including an
Emi Biotti attempt that rang off the pipe – while putting together a few great looks on goal. The Crimson defense also got off to a strong start, keeping the Brown offense off the board in the first 20 minutes. Starting goaltender,
Ainsley Tuffy, made 11 saves in the frame to aid the defensive effort.
Harvard's penalty kill unit was a force to be reckoned with in the first two periods, killing off both penalties and holding Brown to just one shot on goal. After the second successful kill in the second period, Harvard began to look down the ice once again, creating chance after chance in the period. The best looks of the frame came from
Angelica Megdanis, who had a point-blank shot on the doorstep robbed by the Brown goalkeeper. On the other end, Brown managed to sneak a shot across the goal line to take the first lead of the night. Harvard fought hard in an attempt to level the score but could not find an answer as the team headed into the third period down a goal.
The Crimson got the answer it was looking for early in the third period.
Zoe Boosamra danced around the Bears goalkeeper to score the game-tying goal and give Harvard a fighting chance heading into the final stretch. Tuffy stopped another eight saves in the third to hold off Brown for the remainder of regulation, sending the contest into an overtime period.
After a nearly five-minute battle in the three-on-three overtime period, Harvard found itself on a two-on-one rush in the attacking zone with
Carla McSweeney and
Emi Biotti leading the charge. With the puck on her stick gliding down the slot, McSweeney executed a pinpoint pass off the pads of the Brown netminder to set up Biotti for the game-winner. Biotti put the attempt into the twine, scoring the goal with 0.2 seconds left in overtime to give Harvard the win.
The latest game-winner in program history went to Biotti, who scored her third goal of the season to lift the team to the result.
